Detroit Tru-Trac
Hi guys, I posted last week about the clutch packs self-destructing in my rear differential. Rather than going back to the stock configuration (apparently junk?), I'm thinking upgrade. Where can I get the best price on a Tru-Trac? And what else am I going to need to order at the same time? Haven't decided if I'll do it myself or pay a pro...still thinkin!
Gears can be very tricky. My friend just tried to swap in some free 3.55s he got into his Jeep. Got them in and they wouldn't turn for anything. Tried shimming it and played around with it for a day. Ended putting the old ones back in[&:]

The detroit TrueTrac is an AWESOME L/S application since it is clutchless so you never had to rebuild/repair/repack. I had one in my mazda and it would get me through stuff that I would have to put myself in 4wd for in the past.
It also has great manners on road, if you cut a hard Uturn, and stay off the throttle it disengages nicely and allows you to turn w/o the clunking and popping of a locker!

No, I have 4:10's and no plans to change that. Just wondering where to buy whatever parts I'll need. I looked at Randy's Ring & Pinion and didn't see and prices on the website, but if that's the best place I'll give them a call. Anyone care to chime in on what else I may need (seals, bearings, etc..)?

Also check www.performanceoffroadcenter.com as they very often have the lowest prices on Detroit's (lockers or Truetracs).
I had Truetracs front and rear in my Jeep and they are awesome for street and trail as long as you don't lift a tire. Once you lift a tire they act like an open diff and suck. You can try feathering the brake pedal, but usually your screwed by then.
If your looking for unequaled off road performance, go with the full Detroit locker, but for street these are noisy and very mechanical feeling. I changed my Truetracs to full Detroit lockers in the Jeep and they cannot be beat for strength and reliable locker perfomance, but they are not very nice to drive for a daily driver.
If occasional off roading and mostly street driving is your plan and you want smooth performance, then the Truetracs are great....especially in the snow and ice.
A third option is the Auburn unit for the 9.25. It is a LSD, not a full locker, but performs better off road than a Truetrac and lasts much longer than a TracLoc. They are usually less exspensive than a Detroit Trutrac too.

I looked at the Auburn but am leaning toward the Tru-Trac because it's clutchless. Could I assume the Auburn would last longer than the stock LSD? From what I've read, I can put the Tru-Trac in and just about forget about it, that appeals to me! I occasionally get into some rough stuff, but mostly it's snow/ice, mud or sand. I don't get to climb rocks or anything so I don't really get a wheel up too often. Any and all input is welcome, I'm still saving up to purchase SOMETHING. Thanks!
