Is this a good deal on a 95 1500?
Hey guys, I might be a the new owner of a 1995 Ram 1500 shortbed if this deal is good, but I need some input. The thing is I have never been a Mopar guy, but have always loved the look of the 2nd gen Ram. If this is a good deal I am going to pick this up as my winter vehicle and all out daily driver. Here is what I am looking at:
-95 Ram 1500
-black
-shortbed
-5.2L
-auto
-4x4 (4l, 4h)
-155,000 miles
-tinted windows
-window wind screens
problems:
-speedometer isnt working (not sure if it might be the cable or if its a sensor in the rear, suggestions on problem and prices for repair)
-while going slow (parking lot speed), & turning to the right there is a clink that appears as the wheels rotate past the same point. (may be ball joints or something like tie rod ends or even something else. suggestions on what the problem might be and prices for repair)
-throwing a code which might be related to the speedo but I will know the code before I buy.
What I am looking at paying is $1500, which I think is a pretty good deal. The body is straight, has some dings and scratches but hey...its a truck. I guess, just tell me if 1500 is too much with the issues stated above. Also, I could use some good input on that problem while turning to the right.
Thanks
Fry

RE: Is this a good deal on a 95 1500?
with that many miles and being a 95 i would be willing to bet it could be hub bearings.. espeically on a d44.. some have gotten 200K out of them.. some have gotten 20K out of them.. depends on how hard it was beaten and how often 4X4 was engaged.. beargins for these things can run 200+ and rarely are seen for anything cheeper... atleast near me..napa specd me out at 200+ for EACH! . balljoint could be bad too.. but if you doing bearings .. 50 bux for new joints would be a good idea while your in there.. .. also could be front axle ujoints.. or even loose caliper bolts.. either go through the truck or bring someone with you to take a look at everything.. still... if its in decent shape and runs good.. 1500 is still a decent price for a 4X4... is it a QC?
for the speedo.. if can be the tranny or the diff mounted speed sensors.. usually the diff mounted.. called the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) and easy and inexpensive to replace.. and not know what the code is .. cant reall yhelp ya there..

Well here are a few more details. The truck was used for some type of pulling/towing. It has a larger oil pan and airbags for the rear suspension. Also, the noise from turning seems to be the rear end, it seems like it has a locker and is always locked. I can tell it has gears, and it may have had some engine work done, I cant be really sure.
It is also throwing 4 codes:
12 - battery disconnect, no biggie
15 - No Vehicle speed sensor signal, No signal received from the vehicle speed sensor during road load operation. - This is why my speedometer dosnt work, I just need that to be replaced.
32 - EGR Solenoid circuit, Short or open in the EGR solenoid circuit. Check for loose, broken, or shorted wire in the EGR valve wiring and connectors. Possible air fuel ratio imbalance not detected during diagnosis - I am not sure if the last owner just disconnected all the EGR stuff, but if this code means that EGR is deleted or disconnected then that just means better performance, correct?
33 - AC clutch relay circuit, Short or open in the AC clutch circuit. - Not too sure what this is but I assume it has to do with the clutch in the AC compressor or something like that, not AC current. So this is no big deal either
So the only thing that really needs fixed is the replacment Vehicle speed sensor.
Still, he wont take less than 1500 because it was a trade in at his dealership and he dosnt want to loose his *** on the deal. What do yall think? I think I am going to get it but what are your opinions.
Thanks

a deleted EGR setup isnt going to give you better performance
