Default Interesting info from Hypertech

I emailed hypertech a couple of questions I had about the PPIII for my truck. Heres what I said and what they said:

Me:
Hello,

I am considering buying a hypertech PPIII for my 1998 dodge ram 5.9 V8. I have read up on them and they seem like a good product. I have talked to some people and they have said they have seen increase in performance and fuel mileage. I'm not really sure what exactly the benefits are though. I have a couple of questions:

1. Could you tell me the benefits of getting this programmer for my truck? I have a K&N CAI, stock TB, magnaflow hi flow cat, flowmaster 40 delta flow muffler, 3.55 gears, and 285's.

2. What will changing the tire size with the hypertech do for my truck other than correcting the speedometer and correctly recording mileage?

3. Does the hypertech for my truck 50003 I believe, allow for changing in shift points?

4. Is there a guarantee that I will see a fuel mileage increase (considering my driving habits will not change)?

Thanks,
Chris
Hypertech:
Our tuning is designed around a stock vehicle, there is no problem with a cat back exhaust and/or a replacement high flow air filter. Other mods like air intakes, after market mass air flow sensors, headers, high flow cats, larger throttle body etc should not be used with our tuning. When doing so the engine will be apt to ping/detonate which you do not want. We do not have custom tuning available and I recommend not using our Programmer with the mods you have made.

IF the vehicle is equipped with the Kelsey-Hayes ABS brake controller it will give the option to calibrate the speedometer for tire size changes. It does not have the shift point or shift firmness option. Thanks

Jim
I find it interesting that so many people have aftermarket cats, headers, tbs, intakes that use the programmer. Anyone not have any problems with these mods and the programmer? Judging by this email, seems like a good thing I have not purchased one yet.

It's kinda funny to me that they didn't even respond to the mileage question lol. I don't see how using the Hypertech with more modifications would hurt anything but they are the experts, I guess my question is answered though and when the time comes I'll try to get my hands on a Moper Performance PCM instead. The thing I like about the programmers was the ability to go to lower octane fuel for towing, guess thats a risk I will have to take when I tow the boat this summer.

In my opinion most companies err on the side of caution. They don't want you to have problems and be an unhappy customer and since they can't guarantee the result of using their product with your mods they don't want to recommend it. There are ways of dealing with ping/detonation, but you have to decide if it's worth the money to take the chance of having to deal with ping/detonation. I bought my Superchips used off of e-bay so it didn't cost as much, but that root means no support from the manufacturer.

My .02...I have seen this issue on other sites. It appears that a Hypertech programer doesn't work well with most mods other than a catback and drop in.
I've checked the superchips site and it also states that thier product works best with a mostly stock vehicle. However most owners report the superchips model works better with modded vehicles. Having compared both, I believe Superchips is a better choice.

I got a Hypertech for my 01 5.9 auto and it was horrible! Even on the lowest performance setting mine pinged like crazy. At the time, I complained and eventually got to talk to someone at Hypertech and they told me that if I sent it in to them they could "detune" the programmer and send it back to me.
I just got the retailer to return it (which they usually do not do with the performance chips/programmers). I figured whats the point of having them make it less then they originaly intended, which would probaby resut in such a small gain that i would not feel it.
Anyway, my experience with them on my 5.9 v-8 was not good.

hmm good thing I was outbidded twice for them , starting to rethink about getting one, I might just go for the fastman TB, seems like a much better investment (specially when I can get it as a christmas gift [sm=smiley17.gif])

I like mine. I use the 87 octane setting, have a few mods, and have not had anything but good to say about the performance gain I got with mine.....

I have the Hypertech Programer. I installed it before I started reading this site and on the 87 setting it did make an improvement. Not much in performance but the engine ran smoother, and by fixing the tire size, my milage went up about 1mpg. I tried the 93 setting and didn't see crap, it actually didn't run as good as the 87 so I switched back. When I installed the Fastman TB, I switched back to stock programming, installed the TB, reset the computer, ran it about 200 miles then re-programmed with the HTP on the 87 setting. The truck runs the best it ever has, but does ping under heavy load. I do have the leaking plenum so I'm not ready to judge the programmer until that gets fixed in a few weeks. For the price I paid, I don't think it was a great investment. The payoff is nice but not worth $350.00. I really believe that if I would have installed the TB first, I wouldn't even have considered the programmer. I do like being able to change settings for the tire size though. To bad they don't make one that will just change tire size or fix shift points and sell it for about $75.00. If I had to start over from scratch, I'd do the Fastman and free flowing exhaust as my first mod and at the sametime. My opinion! Jeff.
