Being totally water tight isn't a big concern. All that would be in it is an old shovel, some chain and rope. Nothing I would care about if it got smashed in a accident.

My idea was to glue door weather stripping to the edge of the plating that made the vertical sides of the box.

 

yeah but if it gets dented then how will you open or close the bumper?
That and it wont look to puportionate to the truck if you want to fit a shovel in it.

I guess I would just prefer to keep everything in the bed.

 

I forgot that someone on PS.com had started to make one.
But if you look at it, there is no bracing. so the smallest hit from the rear would put a decent dent in it and make it impossible to close

 

thanx guys...... any suggestions anyone might have? i dont want anything as elaborate as the first picture, but the second to last one looks a little too plain....... but it probably helps approach angle.........

haha i wish i had the money to have to make room for a winch but i guess that wont be an issue.



also the second to last one doesnt APPEAR to have any tow points........ quick question. I'm gonna have tow hooks on the front bumper; should i weld them on, or bolt them onto it?

 

bolt and weld... stronger.. or if you just bolt it use grade 8 bolts. use 3/8-1/4 inch steel. strong enough to take pretty much any impact. good for welding too. i'd use 1/4 for the main parts like braces and bolt points and use the 3/8 as filler flat pieces

 

i probably will have very little metal sheets, mostly bars.....

 

hmm missed that.. then i'd go for at least 1 inch diameter pipes. bars would be REALLY heavy... just a bit of metal selection difference.

if you do order stuff go to a steel shop and ask for their "scrap" stuff. usually you'll be able to get it a HELL of a lot cheaper than ordering online.

 

I agree, bolt and weld Grade 8 is the only way to go.

 

this should be a fun project....... my buddy has the welding skills and hes gettin a welder soon...... so hopefully it should go as smoothly as possible

ok i just thought of a question



when i take of my old (stock) bumper, should we cut off the bumper mounts and use them for the new custom bumper? or should we make new bumper bracket mounts for it? or does that even matter?
