No, they're not hard to replace, but if you've never done it before, disconnect the battery so you don't have any surprises. Changing them out isn't real complex, but you are dealing with electrical connections, if you aren't familiar with that stuff, you could make yourself a problem that will leave you stranded somewhere.

Starter is located on the lower side of the cylinder block, at the rear where the trans is bolted to the block. You'll be on your back looking up.

You might see if the auto shop at your school will help you out, don't know if you have a shop there or not.

If you want, I can try to email you some pics so you know what your looking for.

I just went out and looked at mine, forgot how much easier this one is compared to my chev. You can handle it, couple of bolts, and mine has a simple plug harness on it. I've got a '95 with a 360, don't know what you have, but it should be real similiar. Crawl under it and take a look, driver side, you can see the top of the starter from above if you open the hood. Give it a go, I'll bet you have it out in under 10min with basic hand tools.

Yes. You'll see two cylindrical parts, a smaller one piggybacked on the larger one. The plunger contacts will be in the smaller cylinder, and the motor brushes will be in the larger part ( the starter motor itself ). If you get the new parts first, you'll know what you're looking for when you open it up.

Do you have a starter/alternator rebuilder by you? They would be the place to check for parts.
