Default muffler ticket

What does it take to have legal exhaust? I had a cat and dual straight pipes on my truck and yes it was a little loud to some people I thought it was fine but the local police were pulling me over every other time I drove it so after I got pulled over 4 times in the same weekend I decided to put a muffler on it. And the fact that I got a ticket for no/defective muffler and 2 fix it tickets so I put a flowmaster 40 delta flow muffler on it now I had it inspected and the local cop signed off my fix it tickets and said "well its still loud but its alot quieter then you had so I'll let it go" now I am trying to fight the ticket and the district attorney is trying to tell me my flowmaster is still illegal. The funny thing about this is I also have an old 91 dodge that all that has is headers and true dual straight pipes now that truck is loud but I have never been stopped with it. only the bright red lifted 99. anyway if anyone has any comments or dealt with exhaust fines I'm interested in a good story or any advise.

That depends on what state you live in. You have to have a cat and muffler in all 50 states though. And the only reason I can think the 40 series would be illegal is because its still to loud. I actually don't think you have to have a muffler, your exhaust just has to be below a cetian decible, which pretty much means you have to have a muffler. I'd check online or call the police and ask what the laws are.

If you got a ticket for a factory exhaust I'd start by going back to the police station and telling them its factory, if they still wanted you to pay I'd make it DC's problem. I doubt that would happen though

Here in WV you can modify your exhaust but then ............... you have to get a "modified" inspection sticker that costs $36 instead of $12. Plus they are way picky about what they accept these days and they aren't consistent from one inspection station to the other. Then it depends on which State Trooper has PMS on any given day if you're gonna get lit up. But of course they completely ignore all the illegal motorcycle exhausts.

i had a cop pull me over here in SW Ontario for suspected drunken driving when i was dropping a friend oss at the bar. wasn't even leaving the bar when he pulled me over, so obviously i hadn't had anything to drink yet. well needless to say when i blew it didn't even register. well at that point her got onto my exhaust. guess he wanted a ticket out of me somehow. kept arguing that i had straight pipes and they were illegal. i pretty much called him an idiot and he let it go. ended up getting a ticket for not having proof of insurance. 8 expired insurance cards though, so he believed i had insurance at least.

just talking to my father baout this exhaust issue, hes dealt with it many times, mostly in the 60s and 70s though. anyway, if you get a ticket because its too loud and he didnt have a decible meter than your fine, if he cant measure the volume of it than he cant say ****. it would be like getting a speeding ticket without the cop knowing how fast you were even going.
