Hope you have access to a press to get the pinion bearing off and on . I've done this on a chevy firebird I own . It's not that bad just don't hurry. Boy I tell you what 4.56'smake a whole new feel it is unreal how big of a change u get have fun and let us know the results.[8D]
yea he has all the tools, pullers, dial indicator and press, ect..... I like to work fast so takeing it slow is a good idea for this then i guess. and ill tell you how it goes but i have a feeling its going to be more work then i think.
ddog737374- You will love the 4:56 gears. Great off the line acceleration and it will get you up to speed a lot quicker. They are also great for towing. Good luck installing the gears this weekend and have a good time with your father. It is an all day job, I believe. I had my mechanic install it and he did an awesome job. He started the job roughly 11:00 am and I picked up my vehicle at 6:00 pm. but my truck was only a 2wd. Don't forget to take it easy during the breakin period, first 500 miles, and then get the diff. fluid changed again. After that, you are good to go at wot. Let us know how the install goes and how you like the gears.
Thats sweet you can do it yourself and you'll have him to teach you the right way. Gears are one of the things that require some specialty tools and GOOD knowledge of how to do it so most people including myself can't even attempt to do it ourself! Dial Indicators, Shims, Gear Paint, sounds fun though. Good luck.
IndyRamMan- At 75 mph, RPM's at 2400-2600 with OD on. At 65 mph, RPM's at 3200-3400 with OD off. I installed the 4:56's for towing. Hope this helps.

i had mine in the shop today doing the rear end and when i opened the case a couple of pretty big chunks of metal where laying there
it turned out that one of the clutch disk for the limited slip was broken
thank god that it didnt get into the gears that would have really torn some stuff up so know my truck is sitting in the shop with the rearend torn apart

Not to jack the thread or anything but what would be a resonable charge to change out gears? I plan on changing to 4:56 so I talked to a local Cottman transmission shop and to change the front and rear gears with Yukon and put a Auburn limited slip carrier in the rear I was quoted $3000!!! I almost s#*t myself. Now I didnt have him break down parts vs labor but after some checking online the parts only come to $1000. So thats $2000 in labor???? even at $100 per hour (which is very generous) would it would take 20 hours for a professional to complete this job? I think he was trying to rip me off but I could be wrong.
moparrtguy- I had my 4:56's installed for $950.00, that is including gears and labor. My mechanic did an awesome job. It basically took him all day from 11-6. FYI- Installation was on a 2wd. Good luck with your gears. You will love them.
