Default welcome me to the death flash club

ok, so i buy this truck last spring and i really like it. its a real step up from my 30 year old Chevy C10, especially with the a/c, 4wd, seats not all ripped up, dome light, yes a real dome light, seat belt w/shoulder strap, air bags, wow, trucks have come a long way in 30 years, A/C, did i mention the a/c. So i notice right away its a real pig, got no torque, sluggish, barely can get these big tires rolling. anyway i've been driving it for a while and didn't really want to fix anything thats not broke. The big tires cause the speedometer to be off so i was reading peoples opinions about the hypertech but just didn't feel like spending 300 bucks. All the hypertech threads talk about the death flash and i just sort of ignored it until i read a couple of posts talking about how their truck was a pig and i thought - duh. so i go out and look on the pcm and sure enough, there is a second sticker, stuck on upside down, all computer printed, not handwritten, so i guess that means it was done at the factory.

And it reads....

Authorized Software Update
56040
269AE
P56040269AE
TEH08212MDCO
HRBYAA
Sequence No 933520

Looks like Crank Pos Sensor mod and/or Hypertech will be in my future.

Do the CPS mod first, for sure. You may like it enough that you blow off the programmer.

Isn't the Death Flash a dealer "fix" for a leaking plenum gasket? If so, I would think the first thing to check on this truck would be the plenum.

Have you checked it, or had it repaired?

or approximately 4 kegs and a lapdance, (depending on the length of stay at the aforementioned lapdance "institute")

The DF was a last ditch "fix" for the dealers to use when they got tired of scratching their collective heads about customers complaining about pinging for ANY reason. They used to tell the owners to run premium ... HA! In 98, they came up with this elaborate rearangement of the plug wires to stop crossfiring between cylinders (rather then the much more practical remedy of replacing the wires with heavier ones). Then (in 2000, I think) they discovered the plenum gasket problem. Too late ... already had the DF.
