Default Death Flash

OK, My '01 has it... reads something like "authorized software upgrade". My question is, what is the best way to get rid of it? I think I have read hear that the Hypertec will advance the timing to the point DF isn't an issue any longer. Is this correct?

Second question; did this come from the factor like this OR did one of the dealers I had working on it flash the system? Thanks.

Programmer gets rid of the death flash; Hypertech or Superchips. I have the Hypertech, and the difference is like night and day. It does not only take the death flash away but it adjusts shift points, makes firmer shifts, adjust rev limiter, tire size change, ect...

how can a programmer change your shift points and make firmer shifts when our 2 gen.trans. are not electronically controlled? only over-drive and TC.lockup are controlled by the pcm. Not shift points or firmness that's all mechanically controlled.[/align]

as far as dealer flashes, theres a lot from simple drivability problems to recalls. as how trans shifting changes 96 and up trans are 44,46 or 47re. the re is rear wheel drive eletronic. the pcm controls most of the trans like 1st gear. 2 solonoids in trans control the trans are controled by the pcm.

my 01 had a similar sticker that was computer printed. i interpretted that to mean it was reflashed at the factory or earlier. some people report handwritten stickers and figured that was done by the dealer during service.

to get rid of it you can do the crank sensor, hypertech/superchip, or mopar performance pcm.

i very recently bought a used hypertech and haven't quite made up my mind on it yet. dissapointment #1 was that when i reprogrammed for 87 octane it ping'ed like crazy and i had to go fill up with premium (93?) to make it stop. i haven't determined yet if i can get away with 89. disappointment #2 was that it didn't give me the prompt to reprogram speedo for tire size. I called and asked and they said it won't unless i have the kelsey-hayes brake controller, whatever that is. it seems to be a particular flavor of ABS brake control. i'm not sure why i do or don't have it, towing package maybe ? 4 wheel ABS maybe ? not sure.

hypertech alone didn't do much for me due to bad tps. after tps replacement it really came alive with power and torque (maybe hypertech, maybe tps, i don't know). i didn't experience any change in shifting. if anything maybe it delays overdrive a little when you have your foot in it.

no kidding... if you have sluggish, piggish performance don't overlook tps.

I had the death flash from the factory. I got a Hypertech programmer and that got rid of it.
DH - there must be some other issue with your truck to make it ping on the 87 setting. Mine has never pinged at all. Mine also had the "tire size" prompt. I'm going to set mine at the 93 setting and see if the fuel additive I run (Lucas Fuel Conditioner) will let me run 87 on the 93 setting.......
180 degree thermostat will help also - just don't get the Hypertech tstat - people on here have had issues with them for some reason. Get a NAPA Premium stat....
Go to truckaddons.com - they usually have the best price on Hypertechs with free shipping.

There will be a white sticker on the pcm that has a bar code on it and something about "authorized software upgrade" on it......
