01 ram doesnt start? any ideas?
went out to go grab some grub and the truck didnt start. it turns over and turns over but nothing. i can smell gas but? The amp guage has always been right of center and now after attempting to start it its now on the left just where the line starts (so its in the neg).Light on battery is a dim green also.Ive never had a problem with the truck, except for the truck having NO *****.
any help would be great.

Is it turning over slow or at normal speed.
Did you let off the key and wait a second and try again.
Is it coughing, stuttering or attempting to start.

it barely wants to start.....and i mean barely. It kinda chugs 3 times at the end. Its the 2000 Ram quad cab sport with the 5.2L automatic.. i tried a few times. i even waited 30 min and tried again.
If it's turning over at normal speed then your battery isn't the culprit. Your ammeter will always show a discharge when you have a load on the system but the truck isn't running. Start with the basics, good spark? fuel pressure? Also, there's not too many of us, at least those of us with V8's that complain about our truck having "no *****" and being that your truck is an SLT, I'm going to assume it's at least got the 5.2. If it's legitimately lacking power, that could be sign of a bigger problem related to your truck not starting, or something totally unrelated such as the infamous "death flash" or a plugged cat. For now, just start with the basics.
yeah ive read about the cat being plugged and i have a 3" dual exhaust on the way plus i planned on leaving the cat off. what the heck is a death flash?
thanks for your help also.

The death flash was just something the geniuses at Daimler Chrysler thought of to mask the wicked pinging problems with the magnum motors as a result of the defective plenum gaskets that plagued these trucks all the way through production. Basically they figured if they tuned the computer way down, retarding the timing curve and everything, they would stop the pinging problem. It worked, somewhat, but the motors that had their PCM flashed with this "authorized software upgrade" barely had enough snot to get out of their own way! Search "death flash" on the forum and you'll find out all about it.
