I am suspecting your transmission temperature sensor or its circuity. Please check your codes at this web site: http://dodgeram.info/Engine-Gas/OBDI/pcm_fault_code.htm
Hope this helps.

I have the same shift problem. But I have no codes stored in the computer, never had a check engine light. I noticed a massive leak, literally the fluid pours out the housing when hot. Tranny will shift fine and then start to shift at 3,000 then 4,000 then get stuck. If I shift to neutral and then back to drive, it goes into second and all is fine. If I stop and put it in drive it will shift fine again for a while. If I kill the engine and rerstart it it will also shift fine for a few shifts and then start to stick. To me it justr dosen't seem like a dead tranny, but that is what two shops told me. I do mechanic work, but not on trannys. I am lost. I have not replaced anything as yet. Every other problem I had, a quick solution was found here. If anyone has an idea let me know, before I spend $900 on a rebuilt transmission.

Not sure if this is the same problem, but I have a '97 Ram 1500 Sport 4 x 4. Over 120k miles. Driving on highway about 60 mph. Noticed overdrive light is on; tried turn off by pushing O/D button. Light would not turn off; transmission wouldn't shift on take offbut only once. RPMs up; transmission overheat light comes on then check engine light. Drive to nearby shop (families). Father-in-law looks at truck & drives and eventually gets the same problem. Code comes up bad sensor of some sort; replaced sensor. I drive again and not 5 miles problem happens again.

Question: has anyone had this problem? Is it a bad transmission or a simple speed sensor? Or a bad O/D switch? We can't seem to find the problem and don't want to replace the transmission if it doesn't have to be. Thanks.

My truck is doing the exact same thing. 152k. For last couple years truck has had an issue where at approx 70mph steady the torque convertor would lock/unlock with hardly any throttle modulation. Recently it seemed to get worse. TPS was replaced with no effect. Then one trip home the OD Off light came on by itself exiting the highway it downshifted strange then wouldn't upshift and trans temp light came on. Fluid is still clean and doesn;t appear or smell burnt. After the trans cooled I limped the rest of my way home in 2nd as high gear and OD weren't there. There is/was no slipping in first/second at any time. I have made a couple short trips (few miles) to see what it feels like as the I'm rather puzzled. I've had the same experiences of sometimes it shifts fine all the way to OD (no Torque converter lockup noticed), other times it hangs in 2nd and a manual shift to neutral and back to drive then it would go into high gear. Then a couple times while cruising in high gear it would just completely come out of gear. Again shift to Neutral and back and on down the road I go.
I was suspecting an electrical issue with the solenoids but now I'm suspecting the converter as a previous poster noted his had failed. I have noticed the last couple times I've had to just start and move the truck around the driveway that it acts like the converter has drained back which it had never done before.
Last trans service was 120k (fluid/filter) and Dexron II was used. I now am hearing that would be contribute to more band/slip type problems than what I'm experiencing. I'll run the codes tonight, no check engine light has been on. What other diagnostics are recommended before I either open it up or pull it out?

I wonder how many of the issues people have with their transmissions going bad is due to using Dexron II instead of ATF+4. These trannys are based on the (almost) bulletproof 727 (Torqueflite). Now, all I hear is Dodge trannys suck hard.

I'm by no means saying it sucks. 152k, 11 years old - it's done me well. I just need to figure out what's wrong with it. If it was 52k and it emptied its guts on the asphalt - then'd I'd say it sucks. I think most of the trans problems posted or I've heard of are 120k and above - can't complain too much about that with a 1/2 ton truck.

I hadn't noticed much change in trans performance or occurrence rate of my torque convereter unlocking issue with the fluid change up until the failure in question.
