Torque Converter P1740 Code
I have a 2001 Dodge Ram Quad Cab, 8' bed 5.9 L engine with 103,000 miles and I just went through the same thing with Auto Zone. Same code and definition, AZ guy tells me to take it to nearby tranny place where they determine the Torque Converter Clutch solenoid and Pressure Solenoid are bad. $407.00 and 20 miles later, CEL comes on again! Back to tranny guy, this time he finds no codes! Clears out CEL once again, 20 miles later, CEL comes on again! Okay, we're going to Dodge dealer now. Dodge dealer determines I have an engine misfire, a torque converter problem, and a bad emissions pump. He never told me what codes showed up but the truck was idling rough. I let him change plugs and clean injectors for about $200. I wasn't convinced about the emissions pump, I figured if the truck wasn't firing right, the emissions wouldn't be right either. Back to tranny guy, he determines based on a list of what would trigger a 1740 code that the engine misfire was the reason. CEL came on 20 miles later so then it's time for someone else to look at "Christine". I confirm from someone else that the 1740 code exists and thanks to this forum have him bring up the tech bulletin regarding the repair and the tech manual for this tranny. He calls Chrysler and is told that most of the time the 2 solenoids are replaced mistakenly. I don't know if the cover plate repair would have fixed my problem-I went to another tranny guy who determined my torque converter and forward pump were bad. I don't know if this man performed a stall test or not but he was familiar with the 1740 code. I haul a slide-in truck camper and therefore had him install a Heavy Duty trannyupgrade being as how he had to drop the tranny to replace the TC and forward pump anyway. I had a 1990 1/2 ton 318 Dodge Ram which I traded in after 300,000 miles with NO transmission or engine problems.
I have traveled 100 miles today with my $2100rebuilt,heavy duty tranny and that nasty light hasn't come back on. I hope your experience is much better than mine.
The "Check Engine Light" is the best money-maker Detroit ever came out with! Approximately $2700 in my case.
Sorry for the long post.

No need to apologize for the long post...I'm looking for as much information as I can get. Thanks for your input, I only hope I can fix this myself and not have to spend that kind of money...Iowa State University is already cashing me for all I have!
Whoops, I did forget to mention that the CEL came on in lateOctober 2006, I had been trying to get it squared away since then. Over the past weekend I was driving from Dallas to Houston with my camper loaded on the back. While I was in OD, the tranny automatically downshifted while I was on the level, I could not manually override it, and it stayed in lower gear for a couple of miles before upshifting on its own. This happened several times over the course of the trip. On Monday the 22nd, I took it to the tranny shop and got it back today after the rebuild.
PATC custom built one.....have them replace all the chrysler crap with good parts.
I had TCC code on my old 46RE, it turned out that I had a minor miss from a burnt sparkplug wire that tripped the code, due to the miss, the engine bucked. That code doesnt actually mean your tranny is shot, just means there is a hiccup somewhere in the drivetrain.
I replaced my tranny for1 reason only, i knew I was gonna need a rebuild eventually and the front band had delaminated, so within 5000 miles it was gonna happen, but to the day the new tranny got installed it still worked very well, that was 20,000 miles after the TCC code was thrown.

TC and trans go shift kit for about $500.that was 2 years ago and 30,000 miles later...110,000 miles total ,trany still work great

What makes it HD, I do not know all the terminology of transmissions.. so any input would be great. so I feel a little like I know what I am talking about when shopping for a new TC.
