Default Torque Converter P1740 Code

Hey all,
I have a 2000 1500 4x4 with the 5.9 and 80K miles...

My CEL came on and Autozone gave me a troublecode OBDII P1740: torque converter clutch inductive signature malfunction.

Dealer told me that this was very common in these trucks and that my transmission had to be rebuilt to solve the problem! Please tell me this is not true. Does anyone have any advice for a do-it-yourselfer?

Also, I've noticed this winter that when I put my truck in 4wheel it sounds like some bearings are going out in the transfer case...is this common on a truck with only 80K miles?

Thanks,
Andy

my P1740 cel is on now. i bought my 01 4x4 last month and the light came on a few miles from the dealer. i took it back there and they changed a valve body plate now it slips at low speeds. they are looking into it and there machanic says they are going to replace the converter and all the solenoids. how expensive i do not know, but from what i hear you can do it yourself. i am going to there shop tomorrow and i will update my P1740 to you then

No rebuild necessary ... there's a TSB on this: http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2000/21-11-00.htm

I've had this code coming up for a year. Truck does'nt seem to run any different when it's on. I did get a new plate from dealer but don't know where it goes inside. Anybody know where it's at, how deep do you gotta go?

the plate goes on the valve boby, fom what i understand you need to pull the pan filter and valve body and the plate goes on the valve body. about 2 hours worth of work. but when my plate was changed out my trans now slips from 1st to 2nd

WoW, I am having this issue right now myself, 2001 Ram.

I did how ever just finish installation of the Transgo Shift Kit, about 2 weeks later, I got the CEL.

I am told by one Mechanic (Friend) that the Torque Converter needs to be replaced, and the issue will go away. He says this be cause the TCC Stall test fails to stall the engine.

I have another Mechanic (2nd Opinion) telling me the Torque Converter does NOT need to be replace. This mechanic is contacting a friend (engineer) at transgo, for opinions from them.

I tell ya, if someone could tell me, what would be a good upgrade to the 46RE, to eliminate this code, yet strengthen its abilities. I would listen..

Has anyone else had the slipping problem after the plate update? I think I'll leave mine alone until we get this figured out more. I assume that all the trannies after the tsb date were updated when built new at the factory. The newer trucks should be fine then? Keep us updated on your situations guys. Thanks!

Thank you all for all you info!

My truck hasn't been running or preforming any differently since the code popped up and according to your responses I think I'll leave it alone until a surefire fix is found.
