IMO the oem vac setup is really not hard to get working properly.
verify that you have 17" at the red line in 2wd and 17" at the black line in 4wd. if there is a problem in the CAD, switching to posi will do you no good.

no, its not hard. but after about the 2nd or 3rd repair - it gets old.
go posilok and be done with it forever.
this is a really old thread. its got everybody except HankL in it.

I had the same problem with my CAD system. I removed the CAD unit, took off the retainers, moved the fork over to the left, reinstalled the retainers to hold the fork in place. I moved the collar over to the left to engage(lock) the axle and reinstalled the the CAD housing. This locks the axle just as in a full time system or as what would happen when you lock in manual hubs. I did this about 6 months ago and have not had anything bad happen as of this writing. I don't have a light to indicate it's in 4x4 but I don't need it anyways.....just look at the shifter on the floor. This only cost me about 15-30 minutes of my time and no cash out of pocket. Have not noticed any difference in mileage or handling. I think that the CAD system is an afterthought on the designers part and they should have just gone with the tried and trued system of lock out hubs. It maybe old school but it is still the best,IMO.
If anyone has any other ideas for a cheap fix on this or has done what I did and had adverse reactions please let me know b-4 I really screw something up!

Hi everyone i know this a quite old thread but id like some info for myself. i bought a 97 dodge ram 1500 4x4 and iv'e seen these people bypassing the vacuum systems (the ****tiest design ever made by dodge) well anyways when i engage my 4x4 the light does not come on and after maybe say i'm doing 50 on the hwy it will finally engage(still no light, maybe be burnt out or something isnt working right). but as soon as i slow down it will disengage. if i'm stuck in some stuff lets say snow and i put it in 4x4 and really start getting into the throttle it will click in and get me out real quick then take a **** on me. i want to know if this is caused by my vacuum lines. if so i'm just going to bypass it with a video i saw on YouTube that didn't seem to bad of an idea. or if it may be something else.
Thanks for your help, Wh1t3L1ghtn1ng

I don't think thats a vacuum problem. Likely the bushings in there are worn, so the axles are not aligned properly. I would be tempted to pull the housing, and see what's going on. Careful though, the bolts like to break.
