Default Too cold for overdrive?

I read the owners manual and it says that overdrive will only kick in when the transmission reaches a certain temperature. My truck sat for a day and a half in below zero temps then I went to drive it today while it was -10 degrees and my o/d never kicked in. The truck was well warmed up (temp gauge read around 215, which is a different problem - its always read high). I figured either the engine or the 1/2 hour drive (at 70) would warm things up but maybe not at 10 below? Has anyone heard of anything like this?
Thanks
Matt

Sounds like your truck is working just the way it should. This is straight from the 2001 Owners Manual:

"NOTE: If the vehicle is started in ambient temperatures of -5F (-21C) or below, the transmission will not shift into Overdrive. Normal Overdrive operation will resume when the ambient temperature has risen to approximately 2F (-17C). "

I had no idea the overdrive had to do with the outside temp. Thanks for the info.

My tc will not lockup in cold temps. It usually takes 1-3 miles to warm up the tranny enough where the sensor finally gives the signal for OD and lockup.

If the air temp is 0 degrees outside and you have driven 10 miles, that should be plenty to warm the tranny up and allow OD and tc lockup.

I may be wrong.....wouldn't be the 1st time...LOL.

Good luck with your ride.

I asked this exact same question a couple weeks ago. It was below zero and truck never went into O/D. Its now above zero and it goes into O/D. Its normal.

It is like -2 here with wind chills to -25, my truck does the same thing even with the new tranny, glad to see that the safety feature is working properly.

Have the same issue here in the windy city but pardon my ignorance why is it a safety feature? The first day it happened cars where zooming by me and truck was just accelarating very very very very slowly....

Yes it is perfectly normal. Mine did the same thing on a road trip when it was -25. I had just bought the truck and I thought something was wrong until I checked the owners manual. Worked fine as soon as the temp. warmed up a bit.
