Default Is 4wd on the fly shifting?

I got a 99 ram with 4wd. I know sometimes you have to shift to neutral then shift to 4wd, but I was wondering if you can shift on the fly. I could with my 93 dakota, but wanted to make sure.

Thanks

If by shift on the fly, you mean shift into 4 wheel drive while your driving down the road, they yes, I do it all the time. I wouldn't do it much past 30-40 mph though.

You can shift into and out of 4wd high while going under 55mph (although ive went slightly faster and it works)

when shifting into 4wd low, the truck must be in neutral at a speed of no more than 3 mph.
3mph is the smoothest, but not moving at all works also, ive never tryed it above 3mph.

Done it as high as 60 or so ... not an endorsement or anything ... attempt at your own risk.

this is exactly as described in the owners manual, and works perfectly. shift hard and fast when you do shift, and all should be well

I shift mine in and out of"4-hi" all the time while I'm moving, I'm usually not going faster than 25-30 if that, but if shifts so smooth that if you didn't see me do it then you wouldn't know i did.
