what fan to use

RE: what fan to use
Anybody got a cheat for the big Diesel and V10 radiators? Thing is about 41" wide. Flex-a-lite recomends their 290 monster fan, but the darn thing is about $400. I may have to just bite the bullet, cuz I really hate half-***'n and jerry rigging stuff. But if anyone knows of a NICE way of doing a good retrofit, I'd appreciate the info! Thanks

RE: what fan to use
my rad is 32 inches wide. the windstar fans i use are duals and both fans have dual speeds. it only takes one of the fans to keep my truck cool. now im not gonna guarantee it will work for yours..but as cheap as these fans are at your local junk yard, 20 bucks for for a set of fans and take a gamble...once installed...just drive for alittle while and watch your temp. if it gets to hot..shut it down, and go with bigger fans, your out 20 bucks...oh well....one of the fans i believe is 16 inchs and the other is 14 inches..heres some pictures. i opted to keep the original shourd for the simple reason that it gave me something to mount the rad overflow and window cleaner bottle to. had to trim a little for fitment. i pictured the relay i used as well which is a 7.99 foglight relay which also came from the auto parts store.

dual 16" "procomp" fans from ebay,, and i welded and fabricated the fame they are mounted to.. two 100 amp starter selenoids are controlled by two seperate t-stat controller units.. one set to 190 and the other set to 195
each fan is on its own seperate circuit and can be manually manipulated from the cab by a 4 switch circuit.. each fan can be selected to run off eachtheir own t-stats..,, overridden to stay on ,, or be completley shut down...

umm.. i think the fans were 20 or 30 brand new.. over 5500 CFM combined (WAY more then enough) 20 for each selenoid, 25 for each tstat units, and IIRC i had the all the wiring and switches... also had the steel instock aswell..and a few hours of work
oh and 15 each for two new universal coolant jugs from advanced.. one drilled out to hold the washer pump and fluid and the other mounted to the FIPK box for coolant

let me ask you a question, did the fans come to individually and you mounted them to a plateform? my original setup included to 12 inch procomp fans rated at 2200 cfm each and i had them mounted directly to the radiator, which really wasnt enough surface area on a 32 inch wide rad. so i fabbed a sheet metal shroud that pulled the fans about an 1/4 inch off the rad, it kept it cool, but i knew for the summer it wasnt gonna be enough to kept it cool...that why i went to the windstar fans..if you have more pics of your fans id like to see em

RE: what fan to use
yea the fans were invidiuals.. and to correct my last statement... i think they are 15".. or 14" oh hell i cant remember ill have to measure them LOL
i did my fans in the summer ...and for test purposes i mounted them with the zip tie mounts directly to the rad and they didnt perform good enough..and were running more often then i would have liked... thats why i fabbed the shroud... im sitting 1/2" off of the rad... more volume for the air to get sucked through...i also cualked the small gaps around the fans to make sure that any air movement cuased by the fans was infact coming through the rad. and not through small holes... i also lined the edges that come in contact with the face of the radiator with a foam material to act as a gasket .. i do beleive that these two small, but crucial steps help the fans perform at their best...wasted air movement isnt cooling air!!!
ill see what i can do about getting some better pics!!!

Here's the one pic I have up on the internet right now. I'm working on finishing it up right now, but it's 100% functional at the moment. I'm trying to make the wiring more show appropriate. I'm also working on a second revision of the brackets which hold the fan in perfectly. The fan fits 100% flush and is the exact width of the radiator. I forget my radiotor's width off hand.
