Transmission model for 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab 5.9L V8 4x4
#11
I've stated this before in other threads, but here it is again.
(If you have a 1994 or 1995 model year truck, substitute "RH" for all "RE" in the below list.)
For 1500s:
V6 = 42RE (A500)
V8 = 46RE (A518)
For 2500s/3500s:
V8 = 46RE (A518)
V10 = 47RE (A618)
Diesel = 47RE (A618)
There are some that claim 4x4 V6 1500s got the 46RE as well, and only 4x2 V6s had the 42RE, but I have never heard for certain one way or another.

I made this adjusment. On the front one I used the 'E' socket w/a 1/4" to 3/8" adaptor. So, I hope that's gonna be correct. (72" lbs & backed off 1 7/8 turn) The rear one (which is inside the pan & square) I used a 1/4" drive 5/16" 8-point socket. I couldn't get the torque wrench to break before the socket slipped off the bolt. As you know the bolt is rounded on the corners & the socket is not, being an 8-point socket. However, I did get it as tight as it would go before the socket slipped & then backed it off the 3 turns. It's now shifting somewhat hard. I did the filter and oil change a few months ago & have just done the adjustment two weekends ago. I don't smell any 'burnt cork' as my Dad told me I would if the bands are burning.
