Speedo gear housing gasket
Mine is leaking around the speedo gear housing on the side of the tranny. It doesn't look hard to replace. If i take it loose and pull it out is fluid gonna run everywhere? If it is then I'm gonna wait til i change the filter and gasket.
i'm not sure about your 95, but it should be. my 01 is electronic and doesn't have the gear. i replaced the gear in my old Chevy a long time ago. it was easy. Any 94-95-96 guys out there that can help ??
I have a 98. Have trouble with my speedo from time to time. Try this:
Hold the odomter down and put the key in the start position (but dont start your truck )until the odo reads " check ". it runs a self diagnostic of the cluster. Your gauges will cycle thru one time. Once it's done, drive it and see if the speedo has the same issue. If a guage doesnt cycle thru to match the others, somethings wrong with communication with the cpu sensors.
Otherwise, the sensor isnt hard at all to replace.
Good luck.

if i'm reading this right, junkman has a 95 which he says has a old fashioned manual gear in the transmission tailhousing, and he also has a cable driving an old style speedometer.
98dodge, i had a similar problem where my speedo would not work whenever the truck sat out in the hot sun. all the other gauges would work, and all the other gauges would respond during the cluster test. whenever the speedo was not registering speed, it would also not move during the cluster test. after the truck sat in the shade for awhile the speedo would usually work again. i replaced the cluster with one from a junkyard and haven't had any more trouble. btw, the mileage is stored in the cluster and cannot be changed. dodge says you have to buy a new one, with 'certified mileage' loaded in from the factory for big $$.

I take it you didn't accept their "advice" ...[8D].
I'm not sure if the 94-97 speedo is driven directly by cable or if the gear drives a sensor that feeds pulses to the PCM. I do know that in 98 it went pure electronic off the RWSS.

Mine has a cable that runs into the passenger side of the tranny so I assume thats the speedo cable. It has a typical looking housing for a speedo gear. Thats where it leaks from. It looks easy to fix. I was just curious as to how much fluid would come out so I'll know whether I need a drain pan and more fluid or not. 98DodgeRam360- That is good info even though it's useless to me.
