shifting without pressing the brake

Coming from a '96 Jeep Grand Cherokee that requires the brake be depressed to shift, I was surprised to see this newer truck not have that same interlock system. Also, to lock the steering wheel I found I have to rotate it about 3/4 turn to the left. The Jeep's locks at about 1/8th turn to the right.

These trucks have the interlock, but its really really weak. about 2 to three times of shifting with out pressing the break will wear it out.
Because of that if I ever have my little nephew in the truck with me and need to run into a store real quick he always goes with me, or I pull the keys.
I saw a mom and her kid pull up to a liquor tore one night and she left her three year old kid in the car (running) while she ran inside to get her booze. I was sitting there watching the kid, I had some funny feeling that he was going to hit that shifter. It was an old 80's model Lincoln. Sure as rain he grabbed it and pulled it down into reverse, and away the car went. I waited for it to get past my door hoping that the wheel didnt turn and smack my truck. The car picked up speed and slammed into a power pole on a curb on the opposite side of the parking lot. Thankfully when the kid was thrown into the back seat he didn't get hurt. All the while mom was still in the store. I opened the door on the car to see if he was hurt. He wasn't but his mom was freaking out, and it wasnt because her kid just got thrown around the cab of a car like a doll; it was because her bling bling Lincoln got a dent in it. Needless to say I was more than pissed.
