I personally know the owner of one of the larger "once fired brass" ammo manufacturing facilities in Georgia who says he just about can't get brass anymore. Has been forced to downsize his business and lay off 2/3 of his workforce, despite the fact ammo sells for an all time high and it's constantly in shortage!

When he can get it, it's been cut in half by the govt so they have to pay for it to be melted down and re-cast which costs more than buying new brass...
That's bullsh!t, they wonder what is wrong with the country

This is a repost of what appeared on the Georgia Arms website last year:

Georgia Arms is the 5th largest retailer of .223 Ammo in America . They sell 9mm, .45, ..223 ammunition. They normally buy spent brass from the US Department of Defense. Spent brass is "one time used" shell cases used by our Military for training purposes.
They buy the brass, recondition it, and then reload the brass for resale to Law Enforcement, Gun Clubs, Gun Shops, and stores like Wal-Mart. They normally buy 30,000 lbs of spent brass at a time.
This week the DoD wrote a letter to the owner of Georgia Arms and informed him that from now on the DoD will be destroying the spent brass, shredding it. It will no longer be available to the ammo makers, unless they buy it in a scrap shredded condition (which they have no use for). The shredded brass i s now going to be sold by the DoD to China as scrap metal, after the DoD pays for it to be shredded. The DoD is selling the brass to China for less money than the ammo makers have been paying, plus the DoD has to pay to have the brass shredded and do the accounting paperwork.
This sure helps the economy now doesn’t it? Sell cheaper to China , and do not sell at all to a proven US business. Any hidden agenda working here? Obama going after the Firearms Industry and our ammunition!!
The Georgia Arms owner even related a story that one of his competitors had already purchased a load of brass last week. The DoD contacted him this week and said they were sending someone over to make sure it was destroyed. Shell cases he had already bought!
The brass has no value to the ammo maker if it is destroyed/shredded/melted. The ammo manufacturer only uses the empty brass cases to reload different calibers, mainly .223 bullets.
The owner of Georgia Arms says that he will have to lay off at least half of his 60 workers, within 2-3 months if the DoD will no longer sell spent brass cases to the industry. Georgia Arms has 2-3 months of inventory to use, by summer they’re out.
If the Reloading Industry has to purchase new manufacture brass cases, then the cost of ammunition will double or even triple, plus Obama want to add a 500% tax on each shell.
You can read the information and see the DoD letter to Georgia Arms here:

Bass Pro and any of the chain stores are about $50 bucks or more, expensive for guns... you need to find a local shop that's trustworthy and they can usually do much better for ya.

I thought that whole issue was resolved and the department of defense retracted that idea/plan

Supposedly they did, but the guys I am talking to in the re-loading business aren't being able to get brass in tact as of yet. Although, they aren't getting "inspections" any more. The new excuse is that China, Korea and India are hoarding all the metals they can get a hold of. But that still means "someone" in the US is selling off all the brass, copper, steel, etc.

You price a sheet of aluminum or steel lately??? I used to could get 4' x 8' sheets of .080 diamond plate for about $60 for my little truck and jeep accessories I was making. Now a 1' x 2' piece in Home Depot or Lowes is more than that!!!

Yeah, ok. I have read the same thing about China. That has been going on for a good while. The bastards are even building our bridges now too with their metals. Its obviously getting worse. Check this out...this is old and underhanded but recent if that makes sense. I know its kind of OT. http://www.npr.org/2011/09/16/140515...new-bay-bridge I kinda blame the unions slightly...

I haven't bought ammo in about two years, what's it going for these days? My shooting is down a LOT (I even let my membership at the local range lapse) and I have a little stockpile on hand to boot. The only thing I've had to buy in the last dozen years or so has been .40 S&W.

Matter of fact, I'm still shooting a LOT of ammo I bought way back in '99 when a sporting goods store by where I lived in central georgia went under. Bank stepped in and sold EVERYTHING at auction in lots. I grabbed a couple BULK cases of .223, 7.62x39, .30-06, 9mm & .45 for about 33 cents on the dollar. Not to mention I'm still shooting (although I'm about out) from the 12 cases of Fiocchi 12 gauge 2 3/4" 7.5 shot shells I bought at that action for (get this) $34.50 a CASE!!! All the center fire rounds were Sellier & Bellot too, no iron curtain surplus stuff!

I wanna say I bought two cases of .223 (1200 rounds a case) for like $70 per, two cases of 7.62x39 (1440 rounds per case) at like $65 per and I can't remember what the handgun ammo or .30-06 went for.

The only thing I ran out of to date is the .223 but that's because I traded Pyro a case + $75 cash for his USED ONE TIME, Warn XD9000i winch (which is why I now have a winch for my truck & Jeep). Now tell me that weren't a steal!!!

That was a steal on everything ya lucky son of a gun...

As of the other day 9mms were going for 25 cents a round, 40s were around 37 cents, and 45s were around 42 cents and they were Remingtons... of course this is all factory loads, I can do better reloading.
