Just got a promotion to Systems Controls Engineer, working on the automated building management systems (controls HVAC, utilities, etc) and production PLC based systems and controls. Been with the same company for 14 years this year.

 

Congrats on the promotion! I've always wondered, what do you use to program those systems?

 

The BMS is a Johnson Controls Metasys system. The basic platform is windows xp based but they have their "proprietary" software for the various field controllers and devices. The PLC stuff is your run of the mill allen bradley software, RXlogix 5000 for the PLC's and panelbuilder 32 for the HMI's.

 

Pierce? spartan? E-one?

 

That's pretty cool, I have used RXLogix on occasion for a few special applications we've had. We have a couple different kinds of HMI's we're using, one type which are the Siemens Simatic panels, and the others are Unitronics, which are using Visilogic for their programming.

That's one of the possible directions I will go when I get my career started after school. Has it been rewarding for you?

I've got two E-one Titan Crash trucks and two Pierce trucks under my care at work in the oilsands, Northern Alberta. Worked on 4 Oshkoshs in my time at Calgary Airport. Two TIs and two Striker's, one with a Snozzle.

 

I love my job. I started out as an instrumentation tech. Would not change a thing (except to have not stopped school at associates degree). I'm in school again now for my bachelors.
