My wife picked the Dakota.

I hear you on the Wrangler Unlimited. That will probably be our next purchase in a few years. Now that they dumped the 3.8L minivan motor that was in it I'm actually pretty interested in it.

You ain't lyin'... Both of my Wranglers were 4.0s and of the ex's three Grand Cherokees, two were 4.0 I6s. Easiest engine to work on ever made IMO, plus even though it had no mid or high end power compared to about any V6, the low end torque was great. ****ty gas mileage for a 6 cylinder too, but the thing was a tank, couldn't kill it. MY ex's '98 GC went to my mom in '02 when we bought a new GC. My mom sold it when my step dad had a stroke in '05 because she needed a van for wheelchair access. One of her best friends bought it for her daughter who was going to college. Last I saw that Jeep was about two years ago, the girl graduated, got married and now the thing is her husbands DD, had 260k miles on it then and she told me the ONLY problem it ever had was the air conditioner compressor burnt out at 190k miles...

the 4.0 straight 6 was an old AMC design wasn't it? I've seen them bore/stroked to 4.7, with gobs and gobs of low end.

Yep the 4.0 was a worked over amc 258. Good motor but there was no was to make it meet the new emission specs. Also the tj needed more space in front of the motor for a crumple zone to meet crash specs. Hence the downgrade to the 3.8 V6.
