Absolutely. And most of that can be directly related to vehicle configuration, tire size, cargo, etc...

I just got back on about a 1500 mile route through Florida and back to Atlanta. This is a 2011 quad, 2WD, 4.7, 3.92 gear, 18" stock wheels and bed cover. Loaded with wife, two kids and luggage I was barely able to squeeze 19.7mpg over the entire trip. I kept the truck at about 65mph on all interstates with nearly 98% of the travel being on interstate.

Back up a few years I had a 2005 quad, 4.7, auto, 2wd with 3.55 gear and smaller 16" wheels/tires. I could get 21mpg on the same route. Taller gear + lighter wheels/tires usually helped.

Back up a little further in time to the 2000 club cab I had. 4.7, auto, 2wd with 3.55 gear and lighter again 15" wheels/tires. I could squeeze 22.5mpg out of that one on the same trip driving the same speeds and similar loads.

I have a 2005 Quad Cab, 4.7, 4x2. I am not sure if any of this has anything to do with any help, but I have a Westin bullbar with KC Lights on the front and dual exhaust. I am not sure what kind I bought it from a dealer. On my above head readout for MPG its saying high 17 and low 18. Is this right? I saw where that guy said that about the jet chip or something, how much would that help. Also, always heard that a good cold air intake will help and a good dual exhaust will. Any help is great.

That is not just because the 2000 had lighter wheels/tires, but also because it was a lighter truck. The 2nd Gen Dakota to 3rd Gen Dakota added some weight to the truck itself, but kept basically the same engine 4.7L V8 engine through 2007.

And the newer 4.7 in your 2011 can actually get better MPGs than the old 4.7L, all things being equal. However, all things aren't equal, since you have 3.92 gears, you get better acceleration/pulling, but less MPGs on the highway.

Never rely too much on the overhead console. It is estimating based on air intake alone, not actual fuel consumption. The only true method of MPG is to track your miles and divide by how many gallons you put in at the pump when she gets to full. And no, the JET chip is garbage. Spend the same money on a programmer from Superchips or SCT, and not only do you get three tunes (one for gas mileage, one for power, and one for towing) that are all better than JET's one, but you also get something that can read you trouble codes off the truck's computer, which the JET chip cannot.

Best bang: Superchips 3865, cold air intake (though it is really not "cold air") and a low restriction muffler plus removing resonators. Restriction in the exhaust is the y-pipe. You can go true duals, but none of these mods will really improve your mileage that much because you wont be able to keep your foot out of it with the improved performance. E-fan will also net some MPG gains, but again, negated by the fun factor.

Is the Superchips something I can buy and do myself? Also, with my wife in the truck she gets mad when I get on too much, so that may not be an issue. She's no fun.

Yes. Go to the super chips website. 3865 is what you want. Read about them in the FAQ section
