They don't look like they're LEDs. Maybe if they were I'd like it better, but, as it stands now, it's not my favorite.

I definitely don't think they'd look right on my truck.
hmm I thought they do look like LEDs with the small port holes goung in a circle...they look...ok...not really my style either...

Uhmm, look in the middle of the circular thing. It's red. Which is where the lights are located. So therefore, red light behind you, which equals legal.
Seriously, headlights and taillights should NEVER be considered "appearance mods" and should be left alone.
I disagree with that, headlights and taillights affect the appearance of a vehicle. As long as your headlights are bright enough to see with and aren't aimed so high they're blinding people, I see no problem there. And as long as people can see your brake lights there should be no problems there either. Now whether or not the state agrees can depend on state to state but I see no reason not to modify something I wish to change on my vehicle unless it actually would be unsafe, which in a lot of the aftermarket lights is simply not the case. Can't say they're all bad based on just a few.
RP Racing has a point, I believe APC was fined by the DOT for selling illegal tail lights, that did have red in them, but didn't meet the standards set by the DOT. the total came out to well over $1 million from what I remember. However light mods are appearance mods, like the ones I placed on my truck, and the conversions I've made to my lighting system on the truck, such as the LED conversion and HID conversion. HIDs are illegal in the national DOT laws. It is though, one of those laws that a police officer won't normally pull you over JUST for that, but will ticket you for it if you get pulled over for speeding or something like that.

It's pretty easy to tell the different from a stock HID and an aftermarket HID conversion kit. If the entire reflector housing is lit up by the bulb, it's aftermarket. If only the top part of the housing is lit, it's a stock kit. The bulbs that are stock are made with little blocks on the bottom to keep the light from hitting the bottom part of the reflector, which keeps the glare from going towards oncoming vehicles. I started noticing that a couple months back.

Most stock HID setups use projector lenses too. I don't know of any that use reflector assemblys.

I know the Prius and Siennas (high end trims) have a reflector setup, and some Volvos used them too. They were halogen housings, but side by side with halogen lights, the ones I saw were brighter and a more pure white color.

Interesting, that would explain why the HID's on my friend's prius don't have a nice cut off line.

Well they could go as far as completely BANNING anything that modifies a vehicle from stock if it really starts becoming a problem. BTW which it may be starting going that way.

They would **** off a lot of people if they did that, not to mention I see no basis for it.

Yeah if they did that what would happen to old hot rods, custom cars, or even the whole aftermarket industry? I don't think I could ever see that happening.
