I saw on a show on tv that an exhaust system does not add horsepower it only frees up what is already there. Factory exhaust systems are restrictive so a better flowing exhaust lets the engine remove exhaust gasses better.
That's what adds the horsepower/torque. Just like adding the CAI. You're putting in more and air which means you're pushing out more air too; which in turn helps ignite the fuel more efficiently in the chambers. An engine is nothing more than a giant air pump if you think about it.
