i have a 2007 Dakota slt it has the heavy duty towing pac.
the heavy, duty transmission cooler , the dealer said that according to the ser#
it is the heave payload carrier. BUT he can't tell me how much i can put in the bed.
i just want to know if i can put a pallet of pellets (2000lb)in the back.
what do you think?

 

I'm not sure. I checked Edmunds.com and the payload for the 3.7 V-6 is 1390 lbs. That was a base model Quad Cab 4x4, no heavy duty anything. I have a heavy duty 4x2 Club Cab with the V-8 and the 6sp. I've had about 1200 lbs. of generator cable in mine and it did fine. With 2000 lbs., though, the back end is really, really going to be sitting low....perhaps you can pull it off if it's a short haul, but I wouldn't go real far at all.

 

Depends on a few thing. 2WD or 4WD stick or auto? V6 or V8 sport cab or quad? Basically I thinkthe mostthey canlegally carry is about 1700lbs for a2WD I think some of the 4WD's are a low as 1300lbs. If its a short trip I dont think youll break anything with 2000lbs. But maybe someone with more exp. can answer

i have the 4 x 4 cc and pull 3 tons of pellets with my truck. dont use the bed you will break the truck in 1/2 if you have the towing package go and rent a trailer for 25 bucks. you wont be disappointed if you have the v-8.

 

As just said your towing capacity will safely out reach your load capacity .Most of the time heavy duty towing pac only means you can carry a full load all the time with out braking anything . And to carry 1 ton in the box of a 4x4 is going to be real top heavy.

That's a good idea...go to U-Haul, pay $20 and rent a utility trailer for the day. That'll probably be safer. You'll probably be okay with 1 ton in the bed, but it'd be squatting really, really low and put some strain on it. Trailering is the safer way to do it...you can tow over 5000 lbs. with a Dakota V-8 auto.

 

Isn't the max tow rating 7,000 if you have the v8 auto and 3.92s? I know 5,000 is for the v8, auto, and 3.55s (what I have)

 

Last weekend I had just under 1000 pounds of retaining wall block and several bags of base material. The back end was hanging low with that. The truck hauled it fine though. I have V8, auto tranny and 3.55 rear. I did try the tow haul mode but really didn't notice anything. So I would not put much more than about 1200 pounds in the bed.
