Increase seen in Gen 3 daks
I live in Kansas City, MO. and prior to about late September, I rarely spotted any Gen 3's. It seems since then that I see 1 or 2 almost everyday. So if you live in Northwest Missouri and you are on this forum, let's hear from you.
Not from NW Missouri (from Calgary Alberta) but its funny you mention this. I was out for a beer the other day and made the nearly the same comment to my buddy. Because of the various industries (oil/gas, farming, etc.) Alberta has LOT of trucks on the road and in the past six monthsI've seen more and more mid-sized models (Dakota, Tacoma and Frontier) as part of the mix. While there are a lot of different reasons for going mid vs. full sized for me it came down to practicality. I like the flexibility of a quad cab pick up (need to have the ability to drive people for the job at times and still doing reno's on the house) but from previous experience (a lifted '03 Ram 1500 4x4 quad cab short box) a full sized truck is just too damned big. It wouldn't fit into most of the downtown parkades, to get it into my garage I had to cut off part of the stairs (and even then I literally only had an inch to spare) and was pain in the *** to get in and out of while wearing a suit.

I have yet to see MORE gen 3's... I still see a couple everyday, but I see a lot more yota's and chevys. I have been seeing a lot more of the commanders and compases though. (the compas folks, COME ON!)

Here in Northern NJ I have seen a lot more Gen 3's in the past few months than I have ever. It's nice to see actually. Even First Energy and the State of NJ are using them as maintenance trucks.

I also see that the city utilities companies and other service business such as exterminating and cable TV are using them. The 05~07 where quite cost efficient but the 08s have gotten expensive.
