Still not too cold here in Toledo, OH yet. I am still running e85 so my gas is about $0.40/gallon cheaper (although with about 25-30% fewer mpg so I actually pay a little more overall for fuel.)
I am curious how well my engine will run when the weather gets REALLY cold. So far it likes to idle at about 1200RPM when I start it, then sinks down to 7-800ish after about 20 seconds or so. One thing I have noticed, a very strong alcohol smell when I first start it.
One question for you spark plug expert guys: is the main criticism of platinums because they run hot? If so, is it because they get actual temperature hot or something else? If its temperature hot, is the main concern premature detonation and would e85's higher octane help this or not?

Thanks,
Growlor

Yeah, temp has dropped here too in NJ in the past few days. We are from San Diego, but have been here for the past 5 years. I can't stand the snow. But it is what it is.

I'm in Central PA...lived here all my life....we usually get a couple of good storms every winter. The snow doesn't bother me--you can drive on that--I just hate the ice. That ice storm last winter (that shut down every major interstate in PA, except the PA turnpike) was brutal.

Oh I plan on making some changes this year. Our boiler is 47 years old, YES the original with this house. That will be changed out this month. We are also looking into a pellet stove, but that will depend on a few factors. We are a little limited on space!
I'm also planning on replacing my dinosaur heating system. Going with a high end high efficiency system. Should save me big bucks over the long haul. $3.11 a gal. heating oil with no end in sight....brutal. What do you expect from an industry driven by GREED. Everybody benefiting from high oil prices should burn in hell.
