Steering column creak
I have about 26k miles on my 06 dakota and it seems that it is developing a anoying creak, and sometimes a pop somewhere in the steering colum.
When i make turns at slow speeds, it will creak and sometimes seem to make a few popping noises. Also, after the turn, or when the suspension squats from normally road curves, or speed bumps, it the column will creak long and hard.
I was hoping this had nothing to do with my TM leveling kit. At first I just ignored it, but it seems to be getting worse and worse. Today I was able to reproduce what is possibly the problem:
as i had the truck running in a parking space, if I turned the wheel to the left, i could feel somthing in the motion of the steering....if that makes sense. It felt like a "hump" its hard to describe....
Like if im turning the wheel, it felt a tad tighter, then instantly loose, in this 1 spot, and i could make it come back, by going over, back and forth in that area. Maybe thats related?
Is somthing worn out on my dak or what?

It sounds like it is a different issue, but my '07 will make annoying creak/squeeking sounds when I tilt the wheel way down and turn it. I suspect the boot over the tilting joint is making the sound on my truck. Have you checked that on yours?

minkey... i wouldnt be suprised if the sound your hearin isnt your shocks....
I have the same noise and it can get annoying...
Go out and like push up and down hard on the front to compress the shocks... you will probly hear them make noise... (Find a good place to push up and down)

I had this exact same thing happen on my truck. It started around 25K and got worse so I took it in. I had to actually show the tech what I was talking about. They had to order a new steering column. The tech said somekind of connection was wearing out. All was covered under warranty.
Heres an update.
With the vehicle parked and the engine off, i stuck my head down by the pedals, put one hand on the wheel and one hand on the bare steering column shaft before it went through the firewall. I gently rocked the steering wheel back and forth, i could hear a tiny pop and then the creaking as a rocked it, which from where my head was, seemed to be comming directly from the steering wheel itself. There seemed to be a tiny bit of play between the wheel and the column shaft as well, but very little.
I guess I'll have to take it in.

I have an update on this,
Today it was much warmer out then it has been. The creaking was completely gone, but the "pop" when turning slightly right was still there. Does the steering column have grease fittings or any greasable spots? I read around that there is a Z71 silverado fix for this same issue by "greasing steering column fittings".
Besides all this, i took the truck to dodge, they took a shot in the dark and replaced the clock spring, and it did not work. Now they say they will replace the entire steering column if I want, but they need the truck over night to do so.
I have had bad luck at the dealer....for some reason in the back of my mind i feel like im gonna give them my truck, there gonna replace the steering column and the problem is going to persist. It doesnt add up.
Why does it no longer creak when its over 40 degrees out? And why does it have this "pop" when turning slightly right? It sounds like somthings else to me....
Anyone have any advise?

There seems to be a TSB related to this problem, available in our own forum:
2005 DODGE DAKOTA TSB 1901204 - Steering column snapping or ticking sound.
https://dodgeforum.com/recalls-and-t...901204/TSB.htm
I haven't been able to find any further details on these TSB's.

Sounds like the Intermediate Input Shaft on the steering column going bad. That is what they said was the problem with my 2005. Truck had little over 27,000 on it at the time. Watch maxingout the steering wheel. Think that may be part of the problem.
good luck

Thanks for everyones input.
The truck is in the shop today, and should be done by around noon tommorow. At least they are replacing the entire steering column.
Can't complain about that.
The problem seems rare for this truck. When trying to google the issue, i was plagued with full size gm pickup issues with this problem, and some cheap fix that lubes the shaft, with a "lube kit" but it last a small length of time, and then they gotta have it lubed again, like once every year!
I'll let everyone know how this issue turns out tommorow, thanks again.
