Default V8 w/ Manual Trans

For those of you who have manual trannys, what is considered a better combination, the 5.2 w/ 5 speed, the 4.7 with 5-speed or the 4.7 with the 6-speed?

The 6-speed tranny seems to have a shorter throw, but with the extra gear, that would be alot of shifting. Is the 6th gear a shorter first or an overdrive 6th? Is it a better transmission or was it really designed for the v6 engine?

Thanks for any input.

Are you sure you're not thinking of Rams or 2nd gen Dakotas? Ours aren't available with a 5.2 (wish they were though).

all the 6sp is, is a five speed with a really low pull a house down first gear, 6th gear is over dive for the high way, in the city, you driving a 4 sp manual, the 6sp is not a high performance transmisson ( when compared to a mustang, corvette, z28 ect ) but more for torque.

Thanks for the replys.
With a very low 1st, it sounds like maybe it was designed for the v6. The 6 speed is only available with the v6 for 2008, there are some v8s w/ the 6sp (2005-2007?) but are very rare. I would have ordered an '08 w/ v8 and manual tranny if it was available, but now my choices are limited to used.

There are some gen2 5.2 and 4.7 with the 5sp and I was just wanted to know if that was a better configuration.

Yes, I wanted a performance combination, as opposed to a stump pulling tow vehicle. Thanks!

Well, 1st gear, I can get to about 25mph, but the pull of the truck is soooooo strong, I'm almost shifting into 2nd immediately...

I've hit 97mph in 4th gear, with a few hundred RPMs left.... it's definitely made to go fast, after you get outta first gear...

I owned an '02 QC 2wd SLT w/4.7 & 5-speed for three years. I now own an '05 QC 2wd SLT w/4.7 & 6-speed.
The two transmissions have nothing in commonThe 5-speed was a U.S. design; the 6-speed is built in Germany by Getrag. Every gear in the Getrag is lower (higher ratio) than in the 5-speed; sixth is overdrive but still lower than 5th was in the old truck.
When I first drove the '05, I was impressed by the solid shift feel of the new tranny. My '02 had 120k miles on it and the shifter felt like rubber compared to the new one.
However due to the lighter weight in the '02, it was faster in every gear from dead stop to 120+mph, and got better mpg.
I really like my '05, but the older gens were more fun.
BTW, both trucks will get a third gear scratch at 50-55 mph & at any speed in second gear! IMO more fun than 400 hp if it is stuck to a slush box.

I was surpirsed to see how short ranged my dakota was when it came to shifting. I drove my friends 03 dakota a few times and it was a quad cab with a 5 speed manual. A big difference between the two. But then again I like my truck better because it handles a lot better than his did when it came to towing.

Does anybody actually regret getting the 6 speed manual with their v8?

I currently have three Dakotas in my driveway, all w/ manual trannys.
My favorite is the 5.2 w/ the 5sp., although it has many miles and I would like to replace it with a newer truck. I am not sure if the 4.7 w/ the 6 spwould beas fun to drive.

Yeah, I really enjoy driving the v8 w/ manual. Why Dodge stopped making this combo, at least in the Dakota line, I just can't understand.
