Out of Curiosity...
What would it take to swap my 3.7l V6 for a 5.7l Hemi? What kind of parts would I need to buy? How much would I be looking at spending? I have tossed the idea around for awhile but always thought it would be too expensive, but I have read that putting a 5.7l in wouldn't be too difficult.
I can do poor man's mechanics (oil changes, tune up stuff...) but I am not very mechanically inclined so this would be something I would have to get done professionally.

ALOT of $$$ and hard work I'd say like 10k or so not sure... not easy tho... I had a motor swap in an old chevy i had all i can remeber was it cost a ton and was a pain in the ***... got rid of it... Ive seen the cummings I6 in the 2nd gen Dakotas that was sweet... I'd like to do that swap on my dak when i win the lotto... GL
I would like to get a pre-2006 5.7 because they don't have the MDS system in them. I know it would be a lot of money but in the end think of all the possibilities that the 5.7L has to offer. It can be stroked to a 392 and there is a huge aftermarket for parts compared to the 4.7. I think it would be very much worth the money if I could find a motor and a shop that can do it for sure.
There's a guy on the dakota-durangos site that swapped a 5.7 into his 2001 Dakota Club Cab. It was a lot of work but he knew what he was doing and seemed to have a limitless supply of cash to fix all the problems that came up. He got his motor with like 17,000 miles on it from a junkyard for just under $2000. I think I would go the same route, of course I would have my mechanic friend look at the motor for me.

If I wanted to go the easier route I could just get a 4.7L, I can get one with barely any miles on it for $1500. What do I need to switch to a 4.7l?
Excuse me for asking what's probably a stupid question but what does PITA mean?
Never mind... i've been up all night long and my mind just clicked on that one. [&:]

We all know you are bit slow...no worries! I guess you could say Owner like Truck...Truck like Owner...
I dunno about the price being 10k but I bet for sure you'd be in around 5k or alittle more. I dunno much about the electronics with our trucks yet, but as far as switch to the 4.7, I would guess new ecu and such, new rad, engine, motor mounts, basically all motor compartment parts. Itd be less of a Pita to just buy a different truck with the 4.7 especially if you are lacking a bit of mechanical knowledge. Its quite a battle switching to a different size motor and getting everything to work like it use too.

I think I am honestly going to aim for the 5.7L sometime down the road. You'd be slow too if you just got done working all night in a county jail.
get a cummings!!! there so bad A**! the I6 is nice... not really sure on the cost ive heard the swaps get up into the 15-20 range depending on what u do. The one i looked at was a gen 2 dak it has custom everything he had to do a SAS to support the weight of the motor. the cheapest route would be to find a gen 3 with the 4.7 in it. or buy a crate motor all ready to go and fab the motor mounts and such... you'll need a new ecu and all of that other crap as well. its alot of work and money. and you have to work all of the bugs out. too much headache for me... oh ya and it cost too much for a poor man like me lol!...
