Tranny Slow to Engage
I have a 05 Dakota Quad Cab and have been experiencing slow engagements of the transmission when its cold. To be honest, it may have always been this way but now I am finally dedicated to finding out if this is normal or not.
It has 70K on it now but I know its been this way for a lot longer. I took it to the dealer and they said the transmission filter was a mess so they replaced it but it didnt help any.
Here is basically what I mean. If I crank up my truck and put it in gear, its around 5-7 seconds before the transmission fully engages in either drive or reverse. When I say cold, I dont mean cold weather, just anytime the engine has been off for quite a while. During this 5-7 second period, the transmission slowly engages until finally it is normal. Once its warm, I have no problems.
Is this normal or do I Have a problem?
Thanks.

Well, this is a posted TSB for a 2006 quad cab...

I had this TSB taken care of by didge under warranty. they told me it would be 100 bucks if I wasnt under warranty.
they changed a tranny filter and flushed the system...

thats weird, today i brought my 05 dakota with 58000 miles on it to the dealer for tranny fluid change and filters. it was not acting up but needed to be done. also your frt pump may need to be replaced, if it is not working properly while it is cold
It's definitely not normal, as a matter of fact one of our trucks that was doing that recently had to have the transmission rebuilt (lost the 3-4 clutch), GMC not a Dodge but definitely stay on top of it.
for my tranny change they did both filters, cost was almost 160.00, but worth it

I honestly dont know which filter they replaced but it cost much more than $160. Around $300.
They just said the transmission filter. I know it required draining the transmission and refilling it. And it did help. I was having other issues too like it would downshift real hard sometimes, and one time it refused to upshift. After they did the filter and fluid change, all of that went away but it is still slow to engage.
When I started the truck this morning, I let the engine run for around 30 seconds and then put it in reverse. No problems. Its only if I start the truck and then shift fairly quickly thereafter that the problem happens. But whatever the problem, its obviously affected by the engine running.
Does that help any?
Thanks.

on the older mopar trans if the filter was clogded it wouldnt go into rev. like it should the resion for rev and not forw is that rev runs the line pres up to 300 psi, but forw it is droped to 150. the cloged filter cant supply the higher volumn. cold makes it worse

yeah, thats a good point...
Also by letting the engine warm up a little, (which is a good idea anyway) you are allowing the tranny fluid to begin circulating aswell... I would ask the tech that did the work if he replaced both filters...
if he didn't that may very well be your issue.
