I dont know... I have heard 2 8 inch Polk DB subs in a tuned slot port box that actually surprised the hell out of me. sounded a lot like a single 12, minus the Low low frequencies.
for builging on a budget like you are, I would suggest the Pioneer shallow mount subs...

mounting depth of 3 inches and a sealed box size of .35 cubic feet...
a little more than the rockford you listed... But I have heard both of these subs in recommended enclosures... that rockford makes about as much bass as my Alpine Type R components do... That pioneer is a nice little 10 inch sub, sounds clean and tight. and for being in such a small box, it drops pretty low.
just my $0.02

well, I would start by checking that section out man...
Are you an R/T or are you trying to swap into an R/T setup?

I would go with a 10", especially if you're looking for a single tight sub that accentuates whatever music you listen to. I'm gonna sell the 2 12's I just got for free (basically). Too loud for me anymore. Plus there is no room for the kids.

I am going to move the motor swap question to the stratus section... they might be able to help you out.
