Default P0700 and 740 Codes - 2005

I have a 2005 Dakota, V6, AT, 2WD, 75K miles. A week ago the CEL came on and I pulled the following codes:
P0700 Transmission Control System Malfunction
P0740 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfunction

I've reset the codes twice now, and the CEL comes back on after a day or so. The trans shifts fine and the fluid is topped off, but does look somewhat dirty. Are there any steps that I can take to further diagnose this problem or can a dealer/trans shop pull additional codes from any of the diagnostic ports? All I have is an OBDII scanner. Any help would be appreciated. thanks

Did you have the trans flushed? If not I would suggest that first.

I don't believe the trans has ever been flushed. With that being the case, are there filter(s) that should also be changed?

Yes, there are two filters and I would recommend changing them both since you will already be there. The 4x2 and 4x4 filters are different so make sure they sell you the right one.

Yes there are two (if you have same trans as V8) one is a paper element and the other is a spin on. I would take it to a shop so they can do the flush. I believe the service is required at 40K, but I could be wrong with that.

Thanks for the replies. If I do the service I want to have the full flush done which means going to a shop to have it done. My concern is... I've heard many horror stories about doing the first trans flush with that many (75k) miles on it. I've heard that it can do more damage than good by disrupting particles and having them get stuck elsewhere. The truck shifts fine, just CEL is on. Comments on this would be appreciated. thanks

I know what you are talking about. I had a Thunderbird 5.0 that I changed the fluid and the clutch packs started slipping. It was all the particulate suspended in the fluid.

I would say use your judgement. Good Luck.

I thinking about just changing the filter(s) and not doing a complete flush. How much effort is it to change the filter(s)?
