Red face exhaust parts?

Ok, so Im going to redo my exhaust when I stop being sick XD. Ive read about removing resonators and such but Im a little confused as to what parts are called what. I removed the muffler that sits near the spare tire and replaced it with a dynomax superturbo in 2 1/4" pipe size and noticed almost no sound change unless I really floor the truck. Going twords the front there is a long tube type device (resonator?) and in front of that there is what appears to be a smaller muffler. If I move the dynomax to where the long tube device is and put the stock muffler where the dynomax is would that give me a louder tone? I also need to be able to pass NYS emissions. Is the step down to 2 1/4" pipe a major problem?

resonators have nothing to do with emissions the just drone out the sound. Remove one of them and put a straight pipe in its place and see if you like it, if not remove both

The resonators are the small "mufflers" that you call out. The one next to the spare tire and the other in front of the muffler. Resonators are just empty chambers that cancel out sound waves thus resonating and quieting more than what the muffler does. Its all part of how sound waves work. The muffler is the huge tube like structure you are talking about. Like Cuban11182 said the resonators have nothing to do with emissions. I would place your Dynomax where the muffler is and place pipe in place of the resonators. You wont be sorry with that setup, it makes the truck sound like a true V8!

Try like this.
Y-pipe...36" straight pipe...factory over the axle... your dynomax...out.
Worth a shot.

That would make life a lil easier, that way you dont have to do more work in order to get what you are looking for...

I think it would be fine, but don't you still have the first resonator near the front of the truck?
