Even though it's relating to my 4.7 HO Jeep, I started a thread in the Ram section. Kinda want some input from 4.7 owners...

My oil cap says 5w-30. My owners manual says only 5w-20 in one section, in another it specs 5w-30.

I had some Motorcraft (ford oil) 5w-20 left over from an F150 I'd had and used it for my first oil change on the Dak (had 21K miles). Just got some Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20 for the next change...

So, according to the posts I'm reading so far, the 10w-30 viscosity recommended when my 4.7 hit the market was changed to 5w-30 at some point and NOW has changed to 5w-20!

I wish I felt good enough about it to leave it in there for 6000 miles like I have done with the 10w-30 Royal Purple I've been using. I have no reservations about leaving Mobil 1 in for 6k miles, it's the viscosity that's scaring me.
I guess since I paid for the full synthetic, I'll leave it in there for 6k, but by then it will be well into spring in the deep south. Ain't no way I'm gonna run 5w-20 for the summer months down here! So, I just gotta decide if I'm going to continue the 10w-30 I've been using or go down to 5w-30 when I change it out next.

My thanks to all you "little truck" guys for your input here and in the thread in the Ram section...

I posted in the Ram Thread, Hammer! Rich and Frenchy both are right. I run 5w-20 in mine because it calls it out on the cap and in the manual

My '07 states 5w-20 on the cap and the manual, which is what I've been using, especially to not cause any warranty issues as I am still under factory warranty, and I just save my receipts.

As far as the Hemi engines with MDS are concerned, you do need to stick with the recommended 5w-20. Oil pressure plays a role in the MDS system and from what I've read/been told, changing oil types can cause issues with it.

My '01 F-150 I had before the Dakota also required 5w-20, as did my '06 Honda Civic.
