A bad water pump will usually leak at the seals, engine will run warm and when the bearings start to go it will sound like rolling gravel. When it locks it won't turn at all and can smoke your belt if you attempt to engage the A/C with the bearings shot.

Well, the belt can slip if the gears in the pump are going bad.

Overheating can be cause by the waterpump going out, air in the system, faulty thermostat etc.

Yeah, you probably better switch it out. I have an aftermarket waterpump in the garage that I've been keeping around just in case, lol. It will probably only take you about 30 minutes.

Thanks brother, I've been really impressed with the HHR fan so far.

Here is the pump I have on standby in the garage, lol. One of many extra Dakota parts I keep around.

when u look at ur water pump from the top u should see a little hole if u see sum coolant laying around time to change. if not or if ur fan bearings go u will blow ur pump... trust me its happen to me 4 times in my dakota because the guys at the dealership didnt see that they were bad... its pretty much an easy switch. the seals will leak as well and she will run warmer then usual.
