I'm just taking a guess here, with no facts to back it up.
I think there were 2 resonators in the Dakota (and some other vehicles) that were sold from dealers in states that have adopted the California emission standard.

Like I said, just a guess.

Ok yea i was going to say, i looked at the whole pipe going straight to the headers and there wasn't another one

Your best bet is to remove everything from the Y-pipe back (and replace the Y-pipe if you can, too). The muffler on the 3rd gens is a big honking bob marley round thing about 2 feet long, the resonators look like a typical oval muffler, ~12 inches long. Some models have two resonators, one before the muffler and one after the rear axle, some have just one (HO models, I think) that is after the axle. As far as muffler types, do some searches on this forum. Everyone has different opinions and different tastes. Personally I removed everything from the Y-pipe back and installed a flowmaster super 44 single in, dual out. I am replacing the fm with a magnaflow because I do not like the interior sound level of the flowmaster, it is very loud inside at certain RPM's.
