Default HELP - Adding new Remote Central Locking Keys to 2005 Dodge Dakota ?

Hi All

I'm in England, and have just bought this 2005 Dakota Magnum.

http://www.tcsdanbury.co.uk/vehicles...?vehicleId=141

I'd like to add a new remote central locking key to my 2005 Dodge Dakota. Trouble is I only have one working key with the remote central locking/alarm and as far as I know only a Dodge dealer can add a new one to the car but they would also need to know the PIN number for the car to be able to program the car to accept the key.

I don't know the cars PIN number, and I don't know where I could find a dealer in the UK who could do this for me.

Does anyone out there know how I could possibly get this sorted?

Is there anyone with contacts at Dodge who could find out what the car's PIN number is?

I've just bought a second hand, used key fob from the States, as it has the same FCC ID frequency as my cars fob, hopefully I might be able to make use of it?

Apparantly, if I had two working keys I could add and program a new central locking key myself, but I only have one key!

I also think I need the security code for the CD Radio units that's in the car as I think I need to disconnect the battery soon for another piece of work.

Please help!

Cheers

Ray

How the heck did this truck make it over there. Welcome to the forum!... I did not think it would make its way over there. To think... the Canadians thought they had it tough getting after market parts.

LOL

About £3,500, ($5,000) worth of shipping, import duties, sales tax, cutoms clearence and Eurospec mods to lights etc, that's how!

Seriously though, if your a car fan like me and mates and attend various hot rod and other car shows, you see quite a few motors like this!

Trouble is there aren't too many dealers over here!!!

Hey Ray!

Welcome to the forum! Good to see a Dodge in England!

Are you questioning whether you can add another key fob to your truck by yourself?

You should be able to add a key fob if you have one that locks and unlocks the truck already. The procedure deals with inserting the key in the ignition, holding the lock and unlock button on the programmed remote until you hear a ding, and then pressing the lock and unlock button on the new remote until you hear a ding. Let me know if this is what youre looking to do and I can post up the exact instructions.

Welcome to the forum! I never saw too many trucks when I was in Europe a few years ago, let alone a rare 3G Dakota! You will most def have a unique vehicle among the many 4 cyl diesels. Like rengnath says there is a procedure for adding a second factory remote, however if you want to add another security system altogether that bypasses the factory system, that is another story. Do some searching on here, but I'm sure someone will offer to help, Eric's good at these things.

Thanks Rengarth

Yes, that's what I'm trying to do, to add another remote central locking key to the one key that I have. I'm aware of the self programming facility although I don't have the exact process, BUT everyone I've contacted about it, says you can only do the "self programming" if you have TWO WORKING existing remote control key fobs, I'm told that if you only have one working key, you need to take it to a dealer to get a new key added and registered to the car, using a couple of expensive looking diaganostic looking bits of kit.

I forgot to mention, I do have a key with a grey coloured head that fits the iginition and will start the car, but has no remote central locking function. It won't manually open the doors either, I "think" this might be a "Sentinal" key, but I'm not too sure.

I also have a third black key, with no remote function either, which will only open the drivers door and will not start the car.

As I said, I've just bought a "used" key fob from the States (haven't received it yet), which has the same FCC ID as my working FOB, do you think I will be able to reprogram it to function on my car?

Kind regards

Ray

Hi jkeaton

Thanks for your comments, I didn't realise that the 3G's were considered rare, although I'm glad to hear that they are!

I'm receiving confusing information about adding a second key, a lot of people are telling me that the car would have left the factory with two working remote control FOB keys (is this correct?). I'm also told that if you have both of the said factory remotes, you can then add upto a further six other remote fobs yourself using the "in car" programming/registering process. However, other people are telling me, crystal clear fashion, that if you only have one working remote FOB key, you can only add a second remote FOB, by taking it to a dealer who will have to use a scantool and other kit to add it to the car, I'm also told that they will need the car's PIN number, which I do not have!!

Here is just one example of what I'm being told:-

http://www.keyless-remotes.com/dodge...button-new-711

Do you still think I can do it myself? I can't aford to screw up the one and only working remote control key that I have!!!!

P.S. I forgot to mention this:-

I do have a key with a grey coloured head that fits the iginition and will start the car, but has no remote central locking function. It won't manually open the doors either, I "think" this might be a "Sentinal" key, but I'm not too sure.

Try your black and gray keys again. If they fit in the ignition, they should also open the doors. Also, both keys should start the truck. If you have a security system with the encrypted keys, the engine will stall right away if the key doesnt have the proper code.

You should be able to program your one unprogrammed remote with one programmed remote. I think they may mean you need 2 working keys, with one that is programmed. You cannot program a key by yourself if you only have one key that is not programmed. With a working key fob though, you have the ability to enter programming mode which is all you need.

Welcome to the forum. That's a nice dakota you found. Did you order it or you just stumbled upon it ? I have seen post of Rams on other places like Germany but this one is a first. Like everyone is saying, if you have a working key you should be able to program it yourself. All the steps are in the owner's manual. If you don't have it maybe someone can scan the page or put down the steps here for you! Good luck and enjoy your dak.....

By the way, you can get that key fob cheaper on ebay or other web pages $129.00 is crazy for a key!!!

Here is an example:

Good luck!!!

Thanks for your kind comments re my Dak.

I just stumbled accross it at an American & Hot Rod car show here in England. I thought that looks different, it's got the "chrome pack" fitted so nearly everything on it is bright shiny chrome including the alloy wheels, it just looks stunning and means I can take our large, (by UK standards), twin axle caravan, dog and two kids to all the car shows we attend PLUS have a truck that I can show too! I've to take my V8 Land Rover Discovery but that wasn't exactly "different", if you know what I mean!

Thanks for the Key info, just one thing, the Used key I'm getting from the states has already been (presumably), been programmed to another Dak, should the re-programming process erarse this key or do I need to key a new blank key and one that has never been programmed before?

Sorry for being cautious, but I'm a bit on my own over here!!

Thanks for this BUT did you fully read the eBay ad?

This is the paragraph that worries me as it is very specific:-

"PROGRAMMING:If you have 2 working keys you may do the programming yourself. The instructions on how to do it are located in your owners manual. If you only have one working key it will have to go to a dealer or a locksmith to be programmed to make the key work."

Aarrrhhhh ....... I'm so confused!!!!

Do I need two working keys to add a third, (as this listing implies), or can I program it myself with one working key? What happens if the programming routine buggers up my one and only working key?

Any help appriciated.

Hi rengnath

The black key will unlock the door and fits the iginition (it has the same cut pattern as the remote control key), but will not start the car, I think it's a safety key to open the door if you happen to lock your remote keys inside the truck.

The Grey key has a completly different looking cut pattern to the door and remote key, it will not open the door BUT will start the truck.

I looked at another key supplier on ebay and within the listing it says this:-

"PROGRAMMING: If you have 2 working keys you may do the programming yourself. The instructions on how to do it are located in your owners manual. If you only have one working key it will have to go to a dealer or a locksmith to be programmed to make the key work."

I only have one working key, so what do you think I should do?

Thanks

Does your truck have the factory alarm system?

If it does, youll have to research what type of key you need. I know my Dakota doesnt have a transponder in the key, but I dont have a factory alarm.

I just dont understand how the key that fits the ignition and will start the truck wont open your door. On a truck that requires a key with a transponder, the key should open the door and fit the ignition. If the key doesnt have the proper code, the truck will not run.

Regardless, you should have no problems getting the remote to work on your truck. The key will not work to start the truck though. I messed with programming my keys once where I actually cleared all the keys the truck had programmed except for the main key. You put the key in the igniton, press and hold the lock and unlock button, and they you have about a minute to push and hold the lock and unlock button on every remote you want programmed. You only need one key to get in to the programming mode, not two.

The truck will be able to memorize any key, regardless of how many times the key has been programmed before. The truck learns the keys, the keys do not learn the trucks. Therefore, any key can be programmed to any truck (as long as its a compatible key fob)
