So I've had the truck for ~2 weeks and love it, but everytime I fill up with gas I get a check engine light.

Initially I figured I was not putting the gas cap tight enough, then I bought a replacement cap, but still happening.

After I fill up, all is well, gas gauge reads full, no light. Then, after I drive for ~30 kms (15-20 miles) I get the check engine light. Then the gas gauge goes random where it may drop to empty, half a tank, 1/4, etc. Does this for maybe another 10-20 miles and goes back to normal. The check engine light also turns off.

After that the gauge is accurate and no problems until I fill up again. And the exact same thing happens at the same points.

I'll take it in to get the codes checked (I am assuming the truck saves the last code, even if the light goes out) and I ran a bottle of fuel system cleaner through last tank but no change. But with Christmas coming up, I won't be able to take somewhere until likely next week.

I should also note that the truck never runs bad or stumbles, not before, during, or after the light.

Anyone else run into this before? Fuel pump/fuel sending unit?

 

Sounds like a electrical issue with the sending unit, might just be a loose or corroded connection. I would get the code and see what it says. Yes the computer will keep all codes.

Only issue I have had with my gas gauge is that it goes to empty to fast lol.

Just out of curiosity, are you fueling the truck up while its running??

 

OMG i hope not...pet peeve of mine....along with yapping on the cell phone while fueling....there are clear warning signs posted....

 

Nope, turn the truck off, fill it normally.

I also thought maybe I was overfilling the first couple times, so the last time I made sure that once the pump clicked off, I stopped filling. The gauge reads normal (full) but again ~20 miles later the light clicks on and the gauge goes wonky for a bit.

It's weird how it is both random, but not random (happens same each time)

 

well makesure as well you are taking the keys out of the ignition...not leaving the truck in the run position to hear music...even though the motor is off if you still have the power on that can trigger something as well!

 

Once it clicks dont try to top it off. I used to do that and my dealership told me that was the reason why I needed to have my my roll over valve in the tank and the charcoal canister replaced.

Same thing is happening to me. Did you ever get it figured out?
