fog light bulb question 9145 or 9005???
Damn.. So if you were smelling the plastic, does that mean you were parked with them on for a while? or were you moving??
Combo of both. Funny thing is I would smell the burning plastic right at start up with the heat running. I kept thinking it was something with my heater core. The smell was pretty faint at first, and almost lead me to believe I was smelling antifreeze. When I popped the hood, I could only smell it in certain places. If I turned off the heat in the cab, I never got any odor inside.
Today, I smelt it when I got out of the truck from coming home from work. Went to go drop something off by my sister, and came back in to the truck that I left running and it was a strong smell of burning plastic. Then I remembered the fogs, so I turned them off and didnt get any odor at all. Examined the driver side first and swapped the bulb back to stock and found nothing wrong. Went to the passanger side and saw the bulb sitting on its side melted throught the housing. FML.
I checked the fog lights several times after driving. The lense was always cool to the touch, and they were today as well. It only melted the holder that the light locks in to, and that casued the bulb to fall on the side of the housing.
Oh well, TIME TO UPGRADE
And I say it is not safe to run 9005s in factory fogs regardless of how fast you are moving. Aftermarket fogs seem to hold up better to the heat.

I just took mine out tonight for inspection. all systems normal. I've been running them for about 3 weeks now....maybe its those chinese brand fog light housings I got from rock auto...lol
Yeah, Eric commented that the factories just cant handle the heat. The point of failure is small on the factories. The actual housing can handle the heat .... until the bulb holder melts and the bulb tilts.
I'm kinda wondering if the mounting tabs aren't 100% (or even if they are) is there a chance Those guys didn't get them fully locked in and they bounced free letting the light burn the housing?
just checked mine again tonight and still not even a little melting... i studied both of them very carefully and not even a little dark spot. the holder is good. and i dont know if this would make a difference or not but since i had to "make" these work i am using the original wiring harness's for these bulbs.
