Slipping when cold

I got an MIL today when I was pulling out of the driveway and the truck went in to LIMP. I think I know why my dad always said "Dont pull out, son" .... it only makes for undesired results. So back to the trans shop on Monday. At least I have some codes to go by now; last time I had nothing to provide him with except my uneducated description of what the truck felt like it was doing.

I've just been staring at it sitting on my counter for the past 2 hours. I havent been this excited since my exhaust sytem!

Ahh well I guess they do make them.. I will stick with the RTV... I know how to use it properly and I disagree with the instructions from the manual.
My steps are and would be..
1. Drop the pan
2. Clean the transmission surface with plastic scrapper then clean with a cleaner
3. Remove the old filters
4. Fill the new can style filter with ATF4
5. Soak the pick up filter with ATF4
6. Clean the pan with contact cleaner
7. Scrap the pan surface removing all old RTV
*********8. Place a bead of RTV on pan (set let stand for 20 mins)*********
9. Place pan in position and torque to specs
10. Wait at least 30 mins (you need to let the RTV set up)
11. Top off with ATF4
12. Open a beer and be happy (I have never had anything ever leak doing it this way)

Number 8 probably the one that 9/10 people seem to miss when working with RTV I am glad that you have not had any issues with rtv. I dont mind people that use it if that is what is called for, but some people like I said just seem to have the understanding that you have to put rtv on EVERYTHING. I know of a couple people that would put it on head gaskets if I was not in the shop to stop them.
Regnath, you have to allow it to set up a little. Dont let it totally dry, but it has to form. Then you can torque it.

Seriously, clean all the surfaces, and hone if need be, and that straight rubber gasket will last lots longer than straight rtv.
Since you didnt put it on tho, I cant say that they either cleaned everything, or did not put rtv on it, so be prepared lol

ohhh, I have not had as good of luck with the cork gaskets, as long as they did not over tighten you should be okay tho. Unfortunatly, the cork gaskets seem to attract rtv worse than rubber ones when it comes to shops. Still would have preferred a total rubber one tho.
