Hey, it happens to the best of us...
In my younger years, I made a dumb mistake similar to yours. I just dropped in a "heavily modified" 350 in my '70 Chevelle. I just got it started, roughly adjusted the timing and needed to adjust the valve lash. I took it for a "quick spin" down the road, knowing I should not be jumping on it. On the way back up the street, I hammered it.
I stumbled back home in bad shape...2 bent valves. Luckily for me, no damage to the pistons.
I learned a valuable lesson from this, as you will from your mistake.
Don't beat yourself up too bad, what is done is done. Move forward!
Also, I don't think I would mess with repairing what you have. You will not know the true damage done until you get so far into time and money that you won't be able to turn back. Spend your money up front and know what you are getting vs gambling and having to do it the right way afterwards.
