overhead console
i have the overhead courtesy lights right now and am looking at getting a overhead console with the compass, mpg, temp, etc.. is this a possible swap? if anyone may know please answer. thanks
Yes, I did it..it is basically plug and play. You will need to make sure you get an overhead unit from a 2005 (any model Dakota)...and you will need to get the mounting bracket underneath the headliner.
All the connections you will need are under the passenger side cover by the windshield.
Also make sure you get the pigtails from the donor vehicle as well.
Do a search on this forum for more info, I can answer any other questions you may have.

thank you hammond. now i guess i just have to find a 2005 unit for it. they seem to be few and far between. if you may know where i can get one outside of going to a dealer please let me know. thanks again for the info.
every dodge dealership i have talked to tells me that my trucks computer is not progrsmmed for this capability. did you have to change anything major or are they not wanting me to do this is all? if i can get the 2005 unit and wires i really would like to have this on my truck. i have a plug on the post up the passenger side that only uses three out of seven wires there. is that what these wires are for?
Yes, the wire on the post are what is used...download the service manual, it is in there...
I did this and it works fine. When you read your DTCs, it will tell you that another canbus ECU was found. If you REALLY are picky, I think you could have the dealer hook up the starscan and poll the canbus, and then register the overhead console to the main ECU...I was going to do that, but I had issues with adding the steering wheel radio controls (see my other post).
I found mine on Ebay for like $45.00, and ordered the mounting bracket from the dealer for $50.00 (this annoyed me, but had no choice!).
It works great!
