Yeah man, all 4x4s come with a LSD. It's usually the Trac Loc.

My bad Sean, I meant to say "Trac Loc," where the Detroit Tru Trac is a great LSD.

Huh????
an open diff HAS to have spiders, otherwise your tires wouldn't turn at all.... Spiders and the cross shaft are what actually links the Axle shafts to the carrier. The splines in the shaft fit into the splines in the spiders.

If you had no spiders and splines in the actual carrier, it would be a spool.

A better way to say it is the LSD has both left and right spider gears. Where the open differential does not. Hence spinning both wheels vice one.

An open has both left and right spiders.. without all 4 spiders it wouldn't spin anything... Its open because its not traction controled and will spin which ever wheel has the least resistance (so it can spin left or right) but with equal traction to both wheels it will equally spin both.

The LSD has a lockup aiding device where if traction is removed from one wheel, instead of spinning just that wheel, it "locks up" both axles and spins them together, hence gaining traction in a slip situation.

In all technicality, most LSD's DON'T have spider gears, but other methods or devices of locking the axles (IE clutch packs, lock plates)

I think St Patty is out to get ya... and winning... lol

I'm a wrench turner man, this is my first time building a 9.25 rear and 545-RFE tranny. Don't know of many people who can say they have actually.

I'ts my understanding that LSD's do have spider gears and clutch packs.

Locking Differentials don't have spider gears

St Patty's might be winning but his truck will never be sicker than mine, lol

Good job on building the 9.25...I know it gets intimidating getting the lash set just right..
I
f you ever get the chance, try building a nodular designed axle (ie ford 9") you'll sit there afterwards askign yourself "why doesn't everyone make em this easy...

I've never had the urge or will to attempt an auto tranny... Manuals are enough of a headache for me without adding all the clutch packs, valve bodies etc etc...

LSD's can have spiders, worms, clutches, hydro, and all kinds of other random crap.

Locking diffs can have anything from spiders to spools to more random crap.

And St Patty knows to stay the hell away from here or else he'll end up under a Jeep...

Looks like your cross pin just BARELY cleared the ring gear without having to "clearance" anything. Also did you go with a standard crush sleeve for the pinion or did you shim with a solid bushing?

BTW, I had an engine question for ya... hit me up in PM's or Facebook sometime...

LOL, crush sleeve. My biggest shock taking apart the 545-RFE was how beefy the internals were was plus the lack of bands (no bands actually). Every tranny I've seen in the past (mainly Chevy) all had bands.

I've always been an engine builder, now I'm learning gears and trannys. Tomorrow I should have the tranny in so we will see how well I did. I learned a ton from Mike (owns his own performance transmission shop) during this build. Now I'm gong to use my stock transmission for some plug and play with other applications to see how far I can push compatibility on other platforms.

We will see!
