Hypothetically, how big of an engine can we go?

Hey everybody, thanks for the input!

From what I am hearing, how many of you would agree that a 6.2 Hemi would be a good way to go?

Also, thanks for the reminder, but yeah, I figured I would probably have to swap in a new tranny and possibly upgrade the gears in my rear diff.

Do yall think 5 grand would cover that? If not how much would you guesstimate?

If you are doing it all yourself yes. If you are paying shops to do it... no. A stage 2 transmission alone will cost you 2k, you can build one for less than 1/2 of that. So if a shop is doing the install you just bought a 2k transmission and payed 600 for the install. Now your engine/gear budget is $2,400.

When talking motor swaps were talking new motor mounts, wiring harness, tuning and accessories. If you are 4x4 then you are also talking modifying the oil pan for clearance. It really all comes down to how much you are doing yourself.

Honestly, I have no experience working on engines myself. A friend of mine has a silverado 2500 I think, that he works on. Has his own little shop (mainly for his business but does a bit of truck work in it) with an engine puller, lots of tools and welding equip. When it comes to anything on my truck I have always done as much myself as I could and if I didnt know something I learned about it. Like with my stereo install, never done one before and didnt know how to do it. So I asked around, watched a bunch of youtube how to videos, did my research and did it myself, which turned out awesome. thing is if I messed up the stereo the truck still works, if I eff up the engine, im screwed. Either way, when the time comes and I am ready I will most likely do a ton of homework and talk to everyone I know to see what kind of help I can get. I'll be honest with you guys, Im in the military and it looks like I might possibly deploy in the next few months. If that ends up happening my truck is gonna sit at my parents as a back up vehicle and with all the extra money I will save over there Im starting to ponder what I would want to have done while I am gone and what I would want to do myself as soon as I got back. 5 grand was just a ball park number. Honestly, my first priority is to pay off the $6,000 I still owe on her and then to have her gone through from head to toe (she is an 05 with almost 90K) and make everything cherry. After that, I guesstimated that I could possibly put together about $5,000 to do anything else. She is only 2 wheel drive, so not much off roading. But I think all of us here would agree that the body design of our Daks is a perfect harmony of rugged looks that want to just go fast! Granted the front end by itself is a little whimpy, which is why I got a brush guard (totally changed the look of the front end). This is the first time in my life that I have had a nice vehicle and also have the money to do most of things that I could ever want to. As far as add ons and accessories I done just about all I want to, with the exception that I am still debating is the ram air scoop that you, BLOWN287, have on yours. All of the other hoods and scoops that I have seen either don't match the body lines of the truck, or just look cheap. But the one that BLOWN287 has is perfect! And for a bolt on, it matches up pretty damn good with the lines in the hood, plus the fact that you can get them shipped already painted to match is great, but to pay $675 for it seems a little too much. I don't know, what do you think BLOWN, did you just get a really good deal on it, or have you found that it was really worth it? I mean I don't want to invest sooo much money into my truck when she already is getting close to 100K, but with good maintenance and with a new engine and tranny, wouldnt you say its almost like having a new vehicle? Except if the frame falls apart.

Not to get too far fetched, but if I had the means, my dream would be to drop in a 6.2 liter Hemi, tune it, smack on a supercharger, and run nitrous. But I get the feeling, even if I did my fair share of the work, I would be looking at my investment quickly climbing to somewhere between $15,000-$20,000. Would that be accurate?

Sorry to have ranted on for so long guys. Obviously, between my potential change of scenery for the next year or so and my love for my truck, my head has been wandering quite a bit. Thanks for bearing with me, if you actually read my whole post. Ok im done now.

I got my hood scoop off a wrecked 06 Dakota R/T. I made mine functional and ran a ram air intake with it until I bought my Supercharger. They are out there if you look for them.

im looking to see this swap and i would go either the srt v10 or the 5.9l turbo v12 deseal beast and then i would banks porformer the hell out of it. other then that i would get a late 80 5.9l (360 or 383) or even find a 426 hemi. amd bring it to the closes motor shop and give them the credit card and tell them you wan 2000 rwhp and a tranny to hold up to it. you will come out running then. (well if you got the 50000 to drop on a motor that is)

Thanks Blown, Im patient so Ill keep my eyes and ears open for a wrecker that I can scrape off of. Interesting ideas martin114, I guess I am looking at this whole thing backwards. Instead of trying to decide what engine Id want and then see what I can do with it, I should be thinking what performance gains do I want, and then research the best way to get there.

If I could have a top speed thats over 150mph, a 0-60 under 4, run my 1/4's sub 11 seconds, and still have enough torque to tow most anything I'd want...I would be satisfied. That might be asking more than is reasonably possible, but if it's doable and I'd be happy.

On a side note, and this might just be a silly wet dream, I had the thought a while back of what I think would be really cool. Have my truck completed with anything and everything performance and otherwise. But have her suspension lifted a bit with air bags to give her a nice truck stance. But then some joker in a ricer comes next to me at a light and wants to go at it...so I give him a smirk, and hit a few buttons to put my truck in race mode, and by that i mean a dash programmer, turn on the nitrous, and finish it off by dropping the air bags to give her a better racing stance, and then smoke his foreign car off the road. Like I said a little silly, but hey we all like to dream about what if's.

I think the biggest problems with hitting 150MPH will be the wind resistance/aerodynamics of the truck, and the instability the truck has after the 120MPH threshold. There is no performance suspension for our trucks, or any company that will guarantee that their suspension will withhold speeds of 120MPH+. Billy has all the info on that.

All I know is I had the truck up to 117MPH once, and that was enough for me. I haven't gone much over 100 since.

Was he going all out? Because I beat a Corvette once (I didn't let him know we were racing though) ......
