welcome to the 3rd ge dakota forum. As dakkkota asked, are you referring to an exhaust cut-out? Personally I would just make the investment in a good performance exhaust unless you are seriously limited in your noise levels and need to keep your stock exhaust.
I do not see anything wrong with that, but I will warn you that due to the crappy Y-pipe we have the noise is gonna be unbearable, and will POP really horrid due to no back pressure. Now If you did true duals and eliminated the y-pipe I bet it would be cool. I ran just a Y-pipe for over a year and I am glad to have the Magnaflow system installed.

i kind of like the sound of the popping. i down shift coming up to stop lights and off ramps. sounds sooo mean. mine is just cut off as well.
ya i like loud... and my buddy got one on his camaro but hes got 3in long tubes with a 3in cut out and its loud but sounds really good and the other thing was is the stock pipe 2.25 or 2.50
when i was putting my exhaust on, right after i cut everything off after the y-pipe, i just had to go for a spin. It sounded mean as h$ll I admit, but my teeth rattled and I got a headache from the fumes....lol
