Default steering wheel shaking when braking

just got back from vegas, after coming down some of those big *** hills on the 15 south i noticed i had little to no braking ability because my truck and steering wheel would shudder/shake so bad i was not confident enough to press on the brakes any harder than i was. this shuddering/shaking only happens at higher speeds like on the freeway or coming down long steep hills. if im on streets i never notice it.

could this be warped rotors?

either way im going to buy new rotors and brake pads this weekend and put them on asap. last 2 oil changes they told me i needed to get a brake job done but i havent had the extra cash to go buy the parts but after having this happen (kinda scary, if someone were to slam their brakes in front of me going down hill i would not be able to stop i dont think..feels like the front end is going to shake apart) im going to suck it up and be broke for the next 2 weeks and buy the parts and put them on.

That sounds exactly like what happened to me. Except my calipers were seized up and made my rotors warp.

Sounds exactly like warped rotors.

If your steering wheel was not shaking I was going to say it could also be the typical rear brake shudder. There is a tsb on this and is common. Mine does it sometimes only during high speed braking (like braking for an offramp on the interstate) but I just let off and reapply the brakes and it goes away. Never happens during around town driving thats why I dont suspect the rotors because it's not the steering wheel that shakes, the whole truck does.

i can feel it grab harder on the streets, like when im pulling up to a red light i can feel it grab harder and softer but it doesnt shake obviously cause im not going fast.

I would suspect rotors first. Try having them turned first. Cheaper than replacing them (unless they are too worn and cannot be turned).

yes. the oreillys by me turns rotors for $20 each. Plus they can tell you if they are warped and if they are warped, if they can be resurfaced. If they are warped too bad then they cant resurface (turn) them. At least you would know that is the problem then. I've still got my original rotors on with 65K. If they do go, I'm just going to replace them with stock rotors. Rock Auto has them for $15.00. If I can get that kind of mileage from stock ones, no need to spend a ton for dimpled/slotted ones. IMO!
