Angry Hi, I'm a newbee!

I joined this site, because I have been having trouble with my 2006 Dakota 4x4 Crew Cab. I've been getting a check engine light. I took it to the dealer and he said it was code 499. The dealer said he changed the NVLD pump and everything would be ok! 100 miles later, the light came back on. I checked under the truck for the evap canister, etc. and I
believe it's above the fuel tank. After inspecting the straps to the tank, I found the bolt threads were still rusty. I think he just re-set the code and charged me $163!!! I think I was ripped off. What do you guys think?

Usually AutoZone, or other car parts stores will read the code. Make sure it's the same code first. Then, you may want to bring it to another mechanic and have them check out to see if any work was done on it. You should tell them the situation. You will have to pay for it again, BUT, if that mechanic can document it (make sure he takes photographs) you can bring it back to the first place and ask for your money back.

Other options include trying to fix it yourself, or, just bringing it back to the same guys and yelling a lot.

GL!

Welcome to DF and the 3 Gen section. As Bluepony suggested, I would go to Autozone or some auto parts store that does free code reading and see what the code is. Then start from there. It won't do you any good to run to the dealership and start accusing them off ripping you off.

one of the first "tools" I ever bought when OBD II came out was a code reader. (couldn't use a jumper anymore like OBD I). You can get them pretty cheap these days. They are invaluable when it comes to troubleshooting in todays computer controlled cars. NEVER take a vehicle to the dealer to read a code. Heck, they charge you an hours labor just to read the frikkin code. Like whatb is stated above, go to autozone or advance and they will read the code for you. If its the same one, then I would go back to the original dealer and tell them to fix it right this time.

Welcome to Dodge Forum

You can always try to complain to the Srvc Mgr at the dealer

I wouldn't directly accuse the dealer till you have proof in case they actually did the work and can prove it then your credibility is damaged.

As mentioned, Autozone will let you borrow a code reader and check it for free. I would do that, write down the code and/or take a picture. If it's the same code I would take it back to the dealer and explain that the problem does not seem to be fixed; that you would like them to verify the work and why the code came back and that you feel that you should not be charged the diagnostic fee given the circumstances.

If you are going to deal with the dealer stay calm and collected. Even if you hate their guts you can usually get a lot further if you're polite and they won't be able to paint you as a psychopath raving about nothing if you end up having to get Chrysler Corporate involved.

Try to figure it out befor you take it back to the stealership. If its the same code go to the dealer try to reason with them. If nothing tell them what to do with themselves and where to shove your $163. Trust me it works i had to do this after they lost my TOTALED grand cherokee how they did it idk but they did because they are stupid. I effin hate dealers.

Thanks guys!! I did take the truck back to the dealer, and he checked the code and it was 499 (evap system). I tried to stay calm ( that was hard to do). He assured me they changed the part? He reset the code and said if it comes back, they'll fix it for free. Boy do I hate working with dealers!! I'm going to get my own code reader. They really think people are stupid!! I've been working on my own cars for 40 yrs. Thanks again for your help..
